The Plainview-Old Bethpage Chamber of Commerce held its first Holiday Bake-Off Party at the Haypath Park Community Center last week with close to 100 people attending. With entries from all parts of the dessert spectrum, there was something to satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth.
The contest was judged by Dennis Goldfarb, owner of The Bakery in Plainview, and Mike Rusinek, a chef at Applebee’s, and graduate of Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK HS and Johnson & Wales School of Culinary Arts. What also contributed to the evening’s enjoyment were performances from three POBJFKHS A Cappella groups: Chock Full of Notes, On a High Note, and B Sharps. In the spirit of the holidays, the students were engaging, entertaining, and thoroughly enjoyable. The judges chose Ferri Kohen’s Cinnamon Roll and Elan Wurtzel’s Apple Cake as the winners. Ferri Kohen is the wife of Scott Kohen, a financial advisor and POB Chamber of Commerce member. Elan Wurtzel, an attorney with a practice in Plainview, is also a member of the board of directors for the Chamber. The People’s Choice award went to Ritsa Kirschner’s Trio Trifle and Kerry Klein’s Chocolate Chip Cookies. The POB COC thanks all bakers, judges, a cappella groups, and participants. The Chamber would also like to thank the following local companies for making this year’s Bake Off so successful, including Shop Rite, Town Bagel, Father, Son’s & Daughters Floor Covering, PC Richards, Plainview Marriott, John’s Farms, and Big Buzz Communications.
