The following are trustee reports from the Dec. 1 Floral Park village board meeting.
Department of Public Works News
Trustee Thomas Tweedy reported that due to high winds on Saturday, Nov. 28, a broken tree limb hung over electrical service of a home on Mayfair Ave. and a large part of a Bradford Pear tree on Bellmore Ave. had blown down blocking the street. After Superintendent of Public Works Kenneth Tymecki received this report from police, the Tree Department was quickly in place to remove the broken limb, prune the tree to ensure it was safe and remove all of the debris. No other damage was reported.
Recreation Department News
Trustee Mary-Grace Tomecki reported that during the past few weeks, the diligent staff of the Department of Recreation was hard at work raking and mulching the leaves that fell from the more than 81 trees, which provide shade and natural beauty to the park facilities throughout the year. As part of their ongoing efforts to maintain a welcoming and safe Recreation Center in the most cost effective manner, the staff has also begun the process of renovating Field #4. For the first time ever, the renovation of the field is being undertaken without outside assistance. It will include the removal of the lips, as well as the addition of fresh sod and clay. The village looks forward to the months of spring, when their efforts, under the supervision of Superintendent Kurt Meyfohrt, will serve as the inspiration for first class sportsmanship, team spirit, and good-natured competition, qualities that characterize all athletic events hosted by the Floral Park Recreation Center.
Trustee Tomecki reminded all residents that leisure passes expire Dec. 31 and must be renewed for 2010. Village of Floral Park residents can bring completed applications to the Shelter House or Pool Building during business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) Nevertheless, a resident who joins the pool is issued a Resident Pool/Leisure Pass, which is also recognized as a Village of Floral Park Leisure Pass.
As the Recreation Commissioner, Trustee Tomecki would also like to invite residents of all ages to join her in raising a mug of hot cocoa with extra marshmallows at the Recreation Department’s tree lighting ceremony. This annual event is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. near the hockey rink. As always, Santa Claus and his elves will be stopping by to lead us in a holiday sing-along and spread tidings of good cheer to the Village of Floral Park.
Please note that as part of the normal winter operations, starting Friday, Dec. 27 all fields will be closed and the park’s hours will be 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
On motion by Trustee Tweedy, seconded by Trustee James Rhatigan and carried unanimously, Mayor Kevin Greene recessed the meting at 8:15 p.m.
