Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District families received notice of their snow days via electronic messaging. Dr. Harrington has Connect-Ed, a brand name for calling families in the district to inform them of a special issue, said Tom Gould, OBEN Schools media specialist. He said Dr. Harrington made the decision to close the schools on Wednesday, Feb. 10, after hearing Mayor Mike Bloomberg announcing the closing of all the NYC schools.
East Norwich student Brendan Rainey said Dr. Harrington called his house on Tuesday to tell the family about the school closing on Wednesday.
Mr. Gould said, “Dr. Harrington’s decision turned out to be a good call.” He said on Tuesday, she was in Phoenix at a School Supervisor’s Conference so on Wednesday, Assistant Principal for Business Christopher Van Cott made the calls to the district homes for the Thursday school closing.
On Thursday, on the OBENschools.org website, Mr. Gould had added the Thursday closing notice on the scroll crawling across the top of the page.
If you haven’t seen the school’s website, do take a look. What is most impressive is the information about Mr. Van Cott’s report about the use of capital funds in the district. There are color photographs of the work that has been done in the school. The color makes them very understandable. The science classrooms look like a great place to learn.
It was a heavy snowfall, but the snow itself was light and fluffy – the kind that is easy to shovel. Brendan Rainey and Thomas Fletcher helped this reporter shovel the snow on Wednesday in the early evening. Parent and neighbor Sean Rainey used his snow blower on the Karppi sidewalk and driveway early Thursday morning, proving that East Norwich is a great place to live.

Sunday afternoon while driving to Huntington we saw a snow wall and a snowman on East Main Street/Cove Road. The snow has been a wonderful creative medium for children in the commuity. Pictures of snowmen and people are welcome at d_karppi@antonnews.com.
