On Sunday, Feb.21, we were on a pilgrimage to find out more about the Theodore Roosevelt Last Will & Testament and went – of course – to Sagamore Hill National Historic Site. While we didn’t find a copy and/or mention of the will in the amazing assortment of material they have on the president, we were thrilled to see the Visitor’s Center a hotbed of activity.
The room was filled with enthusiastic young people looking through the material. Some were sitting on the floor browsing through books to make their selection. There was lots of material on the Junior Ranger program for them to obtain.
We found two books on Victorian handwork, one on design and the other on embroidery. There is a “fan” of photographs and information on the First Ladies – that is lovely.
We bought a replica of the Rough Rider bandana TR wore – it is navy blue with white polka dots.
There were wonderful books galore and we think we will put some of them on a wish list. We already own several books on TR – including the one we found at an Antique Book and Ephemera Fair that was held at the Abilities school – of TR’s Letters to his Children. We have Mornings on Horseback, and several others. We would like to get a copy of The Rough Riders by TR because we listened to it on tape, borrowed from the OB-EN library, and found it marvelous. To hear TR’s words is to know him better.
What we most wanted you to remember from this comment, is to put Sagamore Hill on your calendar. It is truly worth a visit. And the parking is easy!
