Letter: Challenging Medicare’s Future

The recent piece “The Future of Healthcare Reform” by Bob McMillan (Hicksville Illustrated News, Feb. 19, 2010) omits some vital points concerning Medicare.

First, it is under-funded. With more elderly people living longer, fewer younger workers contributing to the system and only a small amount being deducted from each paycheck, we need a remedy. What we need is efficiency like the way the Veterans Administration is run: customer satisfaction and efficiency. Whether the government or the private sector runs Medicare does not matter. The issue is how efficiently it can be done. Then Medicare will become a first rate system benefiting the many.
