Adelphi New Music V
Features contemporary music performed by three of Adelphi’s most celebrated faculty members: Linda Wetherill, flutist; Susan Jolles, principal harpist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra; and William Zito, guitarist in both the classical and the contemporary repertoire. The program includes: Aforismo for guitar and bass flute by Argentinean composer Alfredo del Monaco, Seven Meditations on Tibet for flute, harp, and guitar by American composer Carman Moore, a work for solo guitar by American composer Richard Brooks and Beyond Solitude by Iranian-American composer Gregory H. Aslani. Beyond Solitude will feature the guest performance of the Noavaran Ensemble, specialists in Persian classical and folk music, under the direction of Homayoon Beigi. The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall, Performing Arts Center, 1 South Ave. A pre-concert discussion will be held at 6:30 p.m.

A free workshop, Nutrition and Breast Cancer: Sorting Fact from Fiction, is offered to those who have had breast cancer from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The workshop is sponsored by the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. Jessica Iannotta, RD, will discuss how diet is related to breast cancer. She will explore foods and nutrients that have received attention in the media and help sort through this often confusing information. Participants will find out how to interpret food labels, discover new tips to plan meals and learn the latest information that will help to promote overall good health and control weight. March 8: Rescue in Haiti: An Eyewitness Perspective – NYPD Detective James Coll went to Haiti just three days after the Jan. 12 earthquake as part of New York Task Force 1, a FEMA team specializing in urban search and rescue. During the next eight days, his team rescued six people from collapsed buildings. He will also discuss the role of both the Haitian and American governments in rescue operations. 2:15 p.m. in the College Center Building.

Andrew Giangola, Director of NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) Business Communications, will be “Professor for a Day.” He will speak to NCC students about the growth and evolution of NASCAR, a $3 billion industry.
