Dr. Ephraim Zackson, 86, of New Hyde Park, died on Feb. 25, 2010, of complications from an infection. Born in the Bronx on June 3, 1923, he was the oldest of five children. He graduated from Jamaica High School in 1940 and received degrees from Queens College and Columbia University. He received a degree in 1949 at Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia where he met his future wife, Isabel Charmatz.
Dr. Zackson worked at hospitals in Chicago and Queens and later opened his practice in an office attached to his family’s home in Floral Park in 1951. A family doctor, he made home visits as well as welcoming patients at his practice at all hours. He taught at Stony Brook University’s medical school where he was twice named Doctor of the Year. He was also recognized by students for outstanding teaching in 1996. In 1994, he was named Family Physician of the Year by the State Academy of Family Physicians.
Dr. Zackson is survived by his wife Dr. Isabel Zackson; children, Dr. Hannah Zackson of Beverly Hills, CA, Saul Zackson of St. Louis and Ruth Taylor of Greenlawn; and six grandchildren. The family was cared for by the Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Home, New Hyde Park.
