The registered voters of Stewart Manor made their voices heard at the polls on Monday, March 1, 2010. The Village of Stewart Manor held the special election to vote on a bond resolution authorizing the acquisition of a fire truck. Voter turnout was strong, with 57 percent of the voters opting not to approve the bond issue.
The vote, which was 348-263, ended months of controversy regarding the purchase of the new emergency vehicle, which would have cost the Village $405,000. Mayor James Kelly sent this statement to the Floral Park Dispatch in response to the results: “The residents of Stewart Manor voted not to pass a bond resolution to obtain a new fire truck at this time, and the village board thanks everyone who came out to vote. The village will have the necessary repairs made to our current engine to have it back in service as soon as possible so we can continue to provide the same high standard of fire and EMS protection that our residents have come to enjoy. At our village board meeting on Tuesday, March 2, many of our residents voiced their support for our fire department and for the volunteers who give their time and effort to keep them safe and secure,” he stated.
Mayor Kelly added that the repairs of their current fire truck are “estimated at $60,000.00 and should take a few weeks to complete.”
