Root Pruning Workshop
Hosted by The Bonsai Society of Greater NY at 8 p.m. in the Farmingdale College Greenhouse. Resident bonsai artist Vincent Russo Jr. will lead participants through the process of inspecting bonsai for being in a ‘root bound’ condition, and then lead everyone through the process of removing the correct amount of soil and roots and refreshing the planting. These techniques are appropriate for houseplants as well as bonsai. Bring a sturdy pair of chopsticks and a temperate bonsai or a pot bound/root bound houseplant that has been in its container for at least one year. Soils and instruction will be provided. Taste of Spring
The board and staff of the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center invite you get away from winter for at least one night at the fourth annual winter cocktail party in the Main Greenhouse at Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park. Director Vinnie Simeone and the staff at the arboretum are hosting the event. Enjoy delectable hors d’oeuvres prepared by Pat Spafford of Periwinkles, while taking in the melodic sounds of tree frogs and the wonderful aromas of tropical flowers, as you mingle with fellow sanctuary supporters and forget the doldrums of winter. Get an up close view of the sanctuary’s birds while educators answer questions. Your ticket purchase supports the programs and services offered by the sanctuary. Tickets are $75 per person. LI Baroque Ensemble
Presents its annual tribute to the great master Johann Sebastian Bach. The program will include notable concertos, trio sonatas, the Suite in B minor and the Cantata #4. Musicians are: Daniel Waitzman, flute; Anca Nicolau and Karl Kawahara, violins; Louise Schulman, viola; Myron Lutzke, violoncello; and Sonia Gezairlian Grib, harpsichord. Joining the ensemble will be the Chamber Singers of Hofstra University conducted by David Freiling and a community chorale from Messiah (Setauket), St. James and St. John’s (Sayville) Lutheran churches. 3 p.m. at Christ Church. St. Patrick’s Day Adoption Event
Find your very own furry “Pot of Gold” at Little Shelter Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, 43 Warner Rd., Huntington. Open your heart and home to a needy dog or cat and you will have more than the “Luck of the Irish,” you’ll will have a loyal, loving companion to share your life with. Visit Little Shelter from noon to 5 p.m. and meet some of the wonderful dogs, cats, puppies and kittens that are available for adoption as well as partake in some of the day’s festivities including free giveaways, a bake sale and more. If you’re unable to adopt, make an donation in honor or memory of someone special, sponsor a needy animal. Shamrocks will be sold for $1, $5, $10, $20 and will be displayed with your pet’s name. Muttontown Hike
Muttontown Preserve will host a guided hike “Hike Muttontown from End to End” from 10 a.m. to noon. The hike is perhaps the most vigorous of the monthly hikes held at Muttontown, involving five or six miles of walking, but the benefit involves the opportunity to see areas of the lower part of the preserve that are seldom visited by the public. The hike will take in ponds, fresh-water marshland and open fields, as well as the grounds around Nassau Hall. Enrollment for the hike ($5) is limited and preregistration is required by calling 571-8500 weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The hike will begin at the Bill Paterson Nature Center on the preserve, Muttontown Ln., south of 25A, East Norwich.
St. Patrick’s Day Dinner and Auction
Last Hope Animal Rescue’s Annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner and Auction will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Milleridge Cottage (at Milleridge Inn), 585 North Broadway, Jericho. Lincoln Day Dinner
The North Syosset-Woodbury Republican Club will be having its 54th Annual Lincoln Day Dinner at The Woodlands, TOB Golf Course, Woodbury. Cocktails will be served at 6 p.m. and dinner will follow. The cost is $90 per person. This year the club will honor The Honorable Edward P. Mangano, Nassau County Executive, as its Lincoln Day Award recipient. The Humanitarian Award will be presented to Larry Sklar, a long standing civic leader in the Syosset community and a strong advocate for veterans. He is a member of the Syosset Rotary.
