Division Avenue Girls Varsity Basketball Win County Class A Championship

On Saturday, Feb. 27, the Girls Varsity Basketball Team at Division Avenue High School won the Nassau County Class A Championship with a 41-31 victory over Lynbrook High School. This is the first county basketball title in the history of Division Avenue High School.

The road to the championship started way back in November when the Lady Dragons were ranked third in ability conference ABC 1. The girls played one of the toughest regular season schedules available and won the conference championship with a record of 11 wins and one loss.

The playoffs started on Feb. 12 with the Lady Dragons ranked first in the A classification and facing the number 16 seed Lawrence. Division won 68-44 to advance to the quarterfinals. Nicolette Parmese led the Dragons with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Julie Ballantyne had 12 points and seven steals, while Taylor Malings added eight points and six assists.

The girls then took on Roosevelt High School in the quarterfinals and came away with a 58-37 victory. Kristen Costello led Division with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Christina Rea and Nicolette McCreary combined for eight points and 12 rebounds, while Breanne Connolly made her presence known with two three-pointers.

The Dragons then moved to the semifinals for only the third time in school history and defeated a very tough Southside team 53-44. The Lady Dragons were 20 for 27 from the free throw line for the game and 12 for 14 in the decisive fourth quarter. Julie Ballantyne and Nicolette Parmese combined for 28 points, 14 of them from the foul line.

 The Lady Dragons then advanced to the Nassau County Finals for the first time in school history where they won the county championship with a 41-31 victory over Lynbrook High School. Taylor Malings led the Dragons with 12 points and six assists, while Nicolette Parmese also had 12 points and chipped in 14 rebounds. This was Nicolette’s 12th double double of the season and a school record!

The girls advance to the Long Island Championship Game against Harborfields High School.
