C.W. Post’s Faculty Challenges Colleagues at NYIT in a Basketball Benefit Game for Haiti
The faculty and administration of C.W. Post and the New York Institute (NYIT) will meet each in a basketball fundraiser to benefit Haiti on April 8. The game is a culmination of the C.W. Post student project Don’t Forget Haiti. The game takes place in C.W Post’s Pratt Center in Brookville.
Since the earthquake devastated the Caribbean island in January, more 230,000 have died and thousands are missing. Millions of Haitians are homeless, forced to live wherever they can find shelter.
Jacqueline Favaloro, a journalism major at C.W. Post along with other students in the school’s Honors Program conceived the fundraising project in January and named it Don’t Forget Haiti.
“People seem to direct their eyes wherever media and celebrities tell them to look. We want to make sure that people don’t forget about Haiti, because the cameras are elsewhere,” said Ms. Favaloro. With the support of faculty, administration and university clubs, she and her friends have been able to assemble the April 8, Haiti fundraiser.
“We invite the prosperous community that surrounds our school to attend this game to show their support,” said Favaloro. “As students, we do not have much money to give, but we hope that the time and energy dedicated to this effort will be enough to change lives on Haiti.”
Tickets are $2 each. Additional donations will be accepted, all proceeds will go to Doctors Without Borders. For more information call 413-6098 or email dan.degerman@my.liu.edu.
