Shop and Dine in Garden City Support the Local Merchants
Beginning on April 1, under a special permit from the village, food establishments on Seventh Street, New Hyde Park Road and Franklin Avenue, have placed tables and chairs outside their shops and restaurants for your convenience and enjoyment. Please stop by to let the merchants know that you appreciate their efforts and enjoy the many fine tastes of Garden City.
It is also paramount that we support all businesses within Garden City and I encourage all residents and professionals within Garden City to shop locally. Your patronage will be appreciated and is needed.
Many residents consider shopping and dining in our business districts as “experience shopping” because they meet friends and neighbors along the way and have an opportunity to interact with them. This is in stark contrast to frantically dashing through the crowds in the mall or the big box retailers.
I encourage residents to make a conscious effort to choose Garden City as the place to shop and dine. Customer service, selection and quality are outstanding. While shopping or dining let the merchant know that you appreciate them and all that they offer.
The Friends of the Garden City Library
The Friends of the Garden City Library is a volunteer organization of Garden City residents who raise money for programs and services not provided by tax dollars.
Some of their year-round activities include film programs, showcase and gallery exhibits, book sales, programs for children, young adults and adults, purchasing computers, furniture, display cases, rugs, lighting, making renovations.
Free museum pass program (Museum of Natural History, Guggenheim, Westbury Gardens, Intrepid, Nassau County Museum of Art).
With a surge of activity in the library in these tough economic times, the Friends are called upon more and more for their backing.
We need the support of every household to continue to make our library a center of intellectual and cultural education. There are no hidden fees or paid employees. Every donation is funneled back to the library.
Become a Friend: Make a donation by check or online. Their annual solicitation letter was sent the end of February. If you did not receive one, pick one up in the library.
Donate gently used books and CDs for the book sales.
Shop at their daily sale racks near the circulation desk for books and CDs at giveaway prices — most from 25 cents to $4. If the approximately 7,500 households contributed $20 it would amount to $150,000.
Long Island Rail Road Track Work –
Covert Avenue Railroad Grade Crossing
The Covert Avenue MTA Long Island Rail Road Grade Crossing in Stewart Manor will be closed to traffic on Saturday, April 17 and Sunday, April 18 to allow rehabilitation of the grade crossing. The MTA Long Island Rail Road has informed the incorporated village that it will be closing the Covert Avenue grade crossing to traffic from 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, April 17.
The MTA Police will be detouring traffic as follows:
South Bound — Covert Avenue, east onto Stewart Avenue to New Hyde Park Road and west on Salisbury Avenue to Covert Avenue.
North Bound — North on Covert Avenue, east on Salisbury Avenue to Covert Avenue, east on Salisbury Avenue, north on New Hyde Park Road and west on Stewart Avenue to Covert Avenue.

The next regularly scheduled board of trustees meeting will be held on Thursday, April 15 at 8 p.m.
