Hicksville’s Anna Lau was among the 150 endurance athletes who successfully completed the 8th annual Long Island Greenbelt Trail Runs on May 8. The 48-year-old completed the 25 Kilometer Run in 3 hours, 21 minutes and 25 seconds, scoring as the 8th woman overall. It was the second consecutive year Lau has successfully completed the 25K Run, and she was seven minutes faster than in 2009.
Overcast skies at the start were followed by some short but torrential showers and high winds before the sun finally made an appearance in the closing stages of the run.
The Greenbelt Trail covers the entire width of Long Island from the Atlantic Ocean north to Long Island Sound, and the Greenbelt Trail 25K covers an out-and-back course on the northern third of the Trail between Plainview and the trail terminus at the Cold Spring Harbor boat dock. The southern miles of the course are fairly flat, but there are a series of nasty hills in the last two miles before the runners reach Cold Spring Harbor.
Race Director Nick Palazzo did another outstanding job putting the pieces together, with some most welcome support from Super Runner’s Shop and its proprietor Gary Muhrcke.
Race organizers were pleased to welcome Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia as the official starter of this year’s Greenbelt Trail 50 Kilometer Run. The town has been a consistent supporter of recreational sporting events, and we look forward to seeing Councilwoman Alesia at many other running events as the year progresses.
