The Women in Physical Education in New York State offer the Dorothea Deitz Memorial Scholarship (DDMS) to provide financial assistance to selected women students planning to major in the field of Physical Education. This scholarship is a memorial to Dorothea Deitz, an outstanding teacher, supervisor and director of physical education for many years in Schenectady and Long Island.
The 2010 DDMS scholarships will be grants to three deserving students in the amounts of $6,500, $5,500 and $4,500. The scholarship is a grant for their freshman year. Loans are available to scholarship winners after their freshman year.
The top prize for New York State this year goes to Oyster Bay High School senior Madelyn “Maddie” Howes. Anyone who knows or has been around Maddie knows that she deserves this recognition for her spirit, leadership and ever-present smile. Maddie is a leader on the field as she is the catcher for the Lady Baymen Varsity Softball team. That team has gone to the County Championship the past two years.
Additionally, Maddie runs the 55-meter sprint for the Oyster Bay High School Winter Track Team and has competed at the county level. Rounding out the year, Maddie played center midfield for the OBHS Varsity Soccer team. Her leadership is evident in that she is the Vice President of the Student Athletic Leadership Program. She is a leader among leaders.
As the award indicates, Maddie will be attending Cortland next fall to prepare for a career as a Physical Education teacher. One look at her senior year schedule and it is clear that Maddie could pursue any career of her choosing. She takes Advanced Placement Physics, Advanced Placement Social Studies, College-level Spanish, Calculus, and Honors English. Maddie played French Horn on the big stage of Carnegie Hall this March with the Oyster Bay High School Band. She is also a member of the Oyster Bay High School Chapter of the National Honor Society.
It is interesting to note that Madelyn Howes, along with Jake Robinson, is the second OBHS senior to be featured in this publication this spring who, with considerable talents, has decided to pursue a career in teaching. This is a testament to the caliber of teaching and the stimulating educational environment found in the Oyster Bay East Norwich Schools that students find inspirational.
