It was another busy weekend in Oyster Bay.
If you drove down to the hamlet you saw the area of the Audrey Avenue extension blocked off on Saturday, June 12, and Sunday, June 13, to create a pedestrian plaza. It was to give the community a chance to consider what could happen in that area in the future.
The Oyster Bay Railroad Museum has a proposal to end the block with a park-like area that closes off the access to Maxwell Avenue and Firemen’s Field parking lot.
An exciting development is the proposed museum Billy Joel is planning in the former Carpets by Barneo site. “This was a Ford dealership in the ’30s,” said Billy Joel. He said, “Thousands of motorcycle people are looking for a place to go to see something different.” He mentioned they are affluent people with bikes that cost thousands of dollars. He is currently designing bikes with touches of the past. He truly enjoys Cruise Nights on Tuesdays and said it would be even better if held on Sundays.
It was great to see his enthusiasm for the idea, as well as his enthusiasm for Oyster Bay. He would like to see the hamlet incorporated, an idea that has come up before and is always interesting to consider.
We met a great many people walking around and enjoying the weekend experience. One of the couples was Maryann and Terry Kelly of East Norwich. On Saturday, June 12, there was a block party in Susan Cove off Hawthorne Avenue, so they came on Sunday with their sons Will and Ben. Will has the same birthday as Billy Joel!
Sunday was also the final concert in the Christ Church series. We kept hearing people talking about Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Ode to Joy being played there with 90 musicians and the church choir. We joined the crowd of listeners with great pleasure. The performance ended in great style with a reception in the parish hall.
All in all, it was a great weekend in Oyster Bay.
P.S. Did we mention the incredible gala for the Boys & Girls Club of Oyster Bay-East Norwich held on Friday, June 11. It was another wonderful event and Bliss Studio provided world class dancing for the entertainment. And to think, they offer lessons so you too can dance like the experts. The evening ended with everyone inspired to dance as they filled the dance floor. Superb!
