Today, May 31, I marched in my first Memorial Day Parade, as your mayor, through the streets of Williston Park. It was a great honor to be part of this eventful day, honoring our troops, who have passed away while serving in our armed forces. The American Legion did a fantastic job of organizing and directing the day’s events. Their ceremony at the Legion Hall was both heartwarming and chilling. The dedication the Legionnaires demonstrated in remembering our fallen soldiers sent a strong message to those in attendance. They are to be commended for these efforts.
On behalf of the Williston Park Board of Trustees, I’d like to thank all those who participated in the day’s event. Besides the Legionnaires, marching were the Ladies Auxiliary, the Williston Park Fire Department, the Williston Park Little League, Boy Scouts, the Herricks High School Band. Thanks to our Auxiliary Police who provided traffic control along with police officers from the Third Precinct. And a thanks to all those who lined the streets to honor our veterans.
The Beautification Committee , under the leadership of trustee Kevin Rynne and coordinator Gene McCarthy have been working weekly, in the early stages of revival. The efforts of the group are visually evident throughout the village, most notably on Hillside Ave. (Check out the large cement planters along Hillside Avenue.)
The Roger Fay Pool, although not ready at this point, has been undergoing the seasonal cleanup. Most of the work should be completed by June 5, open house weekend. If you haven’t registered yet , please do so to avoid the $50 increase that begins June 7.
The village received a number of bids for our project road work (Ackerman grant- Bond Issue). The opening of the bids took place this past Monday and the board will review them at next week’s workshop session. While the Ackerman grant must wait until NYS gives the OK to release the funds, it is expected that the road work from our own bond issue should begin in the near future, barring any unforeseen events.
As the warm weather has arrived, drivers be aware of the residents of our village, especially our young children, while driving through our streets. I’ve asked Inspector Canavan, commander of the 3rd Precinct to step up enforcement whenever possible. There are no excuses for driving recklessly (speeding, failure to stop at stop signs, etc.)through the village. Remember, it could be a family member, neighbor, friend who is at risk. Let’s, as a village, work together to make our streets safer for all. Let’s all join in this effort.
