HWD’s System Withstands Heat Wave With Peak Performance
Over the last two and a half weeks the Hicksville Water District’s (HWD) systems have run at peak performance levels despite the unusually high temperature our area experienced. Commissioner Karl Schweitzer said, “While other districts have been stressed due to increased usage, our system performed great without experiencing any issues.” At the peak of the hot weather, the Town of Hempstead requested the HWD temporarily supplement its wells through interconnections in order to assist the Town of Hempstead in meeting their water demands.
“Over the past few weeks we have been pumping over 13 million gallons of water per day, with a high of 16.9 million gallons in one day. We are extremely pleased with how well our system is handling the increased demands,” said HWD Superintendent Bill Schuckmann. Average pumpage per day during the summer months ranges from 10 to 13 million gallons per day.
Commissioner Schweitzer asked the community, “To be mindful of water usage during this time and to avoid water waste whenever possible. The HWD thanks all residents for their cooperation and hopes everyone stays cool during these hot days and remember to drink plenty of water.”
Since 1921, HWD has been providing clean, quality water to the communities it serves, to more than 15,400 homes and businesses in Hicksville, as well as portions of Bethpage, East Meadow, Jericho, Levittown and Westbury.
