New Hyde Park Little League Girls 9/10

Win District 29 Championship!

The 9/10 Girls from NHPLL finished an impressive 4 game sweep to take the District 29 Championship!  NHPLL won all 4 games by the 10 run rule and won the 4 games by a combined score of 41-1. In the championship game NHPLL beat Floral Park 10-0 behind an impressive pitching performance by Melissa Ward. Melissa struck out 8 in 4 innings allowing just one hit. Melissa also singled in the first run to give NHPLL the lead.

The offense was led by Maggie Donnelly who had 3 hits and 3 runs. Jenny Hickey singled in the first and scored the first run. Jenny added another single and scored again. Ann Grimshaw did the catching and had 2 hits and 2 runs. Samantha Merino had a beautiful fake bunt swinging hit that went into right center for a double. Gabby Morales had another solid hit and was terrific on the bases taking second on a heads up play when the throw from the outfield missed the cutoff. Gabby and Jamie Mooney finished the game in the 4th with RBI’s to complete the 10-0 win and set off the wild celebration. These girls are hitting on all cylinders right now with dominant pitching, terrific defense and an explosive offense. The next stop is the Sectional Tournament this week in Long Island which will feature teams from Rockville Center, Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island. The winner goes to the State Championship!

Round 1:

NHPLL 10 Vs. Garden City South 0

The 10U Girls Williamsport Softball tournament started with a bang for the girls from New Hyde Park as they scored early and often to take a 10-0 win from Garden City South. Jenny Hickey set the tone of the game by striking out the first two hitters and retiring GCS in order in the top of the first. Kayla Fitzpatrick led off the bottom of the inning with a perfectly placed bunt single to start the offense which struck for 5 first inning runs. Jenny Hickey, Maggie Donnelly and Ann Grimshaw followed with singles to put NHPLL up 2-0. Samantha Merino followed with a sharp ground ball to second that scored a run. Katie Tubridy then singled in a run and Emma Nidermaier capped off the inning with a tough at bat which resulted in a hard ground ball to second that scored the 5th run of the inning. Kayla and Maggie singled in the second inning then each scored on singles by Ann and Samantha. Melissa Ward singled and scored a run in the 3rd inning. Jenny Hickey pitched a complete game 1 hitter while striking out 11 batters in 4 innings.

Round 2:

NHPLL 10 Vs. Franklin Square 0

 The second round of the tournament pitted two old friends against each other with NHPLL coming out on top 10-0 behind the strong pitching of Jenny Hickey and the strong offense that does not let up. The New Hyde Park girls scored first again, getting two first inning runs when Jenny Hickey singled, Ann Grimshaw walked, Melissa Ward singled in Jenny and Samantha Merino singled in Ann. In the 2nd inning Jamie Mooney bunted her way on and Maggie Donnelly knocked her in with a long double to left field. New Hyde Park opened it up in the 4th inning scoring 7 times to end the game by the 10 run rule. New Hyde Park had an incredible 10 hits in a row started by Jenny Hickey, followed by Maggie Donnelly, Ann Grimshaw, Melissa Ward, Samantha Merino, Katie Tubridy, Sophia Jacoby, Gabby Morales, Kayla Fitzpatrick and finished by Jenny who singled in Sophia for the 7th run of the inning and the 10th straight hit. New Hyde Park has batted 57 times in 2 games with only 3 strikeouts. Jenny pitched a complete game striking out 8. The final play of the game was a double play when Kayla Fitzpatrick, playing first, had a put out at first then threw to 3rd base where Sophia Jacoby was waiting to apply the tag on the runner trying to go from first to third on the play.

Round 3: District Semi-Finals

NHPLL 11  Vs.  Floral Park  1

NHP scored in the first inning to take an early lead then continued to hit as they run ruled Floral Park 11-1. Kayla Fitzpatrick led off with a single, Melissa Ward walked and Maggie Donnelly put down a perfect bunt to score the first run and Melissa scored on a bad throw to give NHP the early 2-0 lead. The dynamic pitching combination of Jenny Hickey and Melissa Ward did not need any more runs as they combined to pitch 5 innings while striking out 8 and giving up 2 hits and 1 run. Jenny added 2 hits and a run scored. Emma Nidermaier made a terrific play in right field to throw out a runner at first base. Emma also had a beautiful bunt single, another single and scored a run. Sophia Jacoby and Kayla Fitzpatrick were solid on the right side of the infield combining for 4 putouts and 2 assists. Kayla had 3 hits and scored 3 runs. Melissa Ward had 3 hits and 3 RBI. Gabby Morales and Felisa Bronzino each had RBI singles in the win.
