Dream Dancing – Performers from Dance Visions take up residency at the Long Island Children’s Museum and present “Dreamscape,” based on the themes in LICM’s summer exhibit, Night Journeys.
New Exhibit -Night Journeys: An Adventure in the World of Sleep and Dreams
Through September 12
Be among the first visitors to take a fascinating journey through the world of bedtime rituals and routines and into the nighttime experience of sleep and dreams. Visitors enter into a whimsical bedroom setting where they are introduced to sleeping places from many parts of the world. Lie down on an ancient Egyptian bed, try out a headrest from Japan or Somalia or carry dolls using a Mexican rebozo. Peek into unusual sleeping places, shine giant flashlights under the bed to scare away the monsters and explore bedtime rituals from around the world.
Visitors continue their journey into the world of sleep and dreams by exploring the “active” state of sleep in an animated video that shows eye movement, body movement and brain activity during sleep. Next, compare some of your dreams to those of both children and adults and see what they mean. Explore different approaches to dream interpretation by people around the world. Learn about dream books from China, feed a bad dream to Baku—the Japanese dream eater and see how a family in Malaysia shares their dreams over breakfast. All Ages. Free with museum admission.
Summer Programs at LICM Examine Art, Science and Nature
Summer hours have started at the Long Island Children’s Museum, which means that children and families can visit every day and explore, discover and play. LICM has planned a variety of summer workshop series exploring a range of themes and interests. Join us this week as we learn more about the environment, explore the animal kingdom, enjoy a unique theater performance or create a work of art in a fun-filled workshop.

Green Teens is an environmental education program that trains high school students to become outdoor educators as they develop and implement weekly green-themed workshops for young children.
Animal Talk with Scout Stacey
Calling all scientists! Join Scout Stacey every week in the It’s Alive gallery for an exploration of the animal kingdom. From reptiles to birds to insects, we will use all our senses to observe these fascinating organisms. Learn about their habitats, what they eat, and how to properly take care of them. Grab your magnifying glasses and come on over for Animal Talk to have all your creature questions answered! All activities will be held at the Long Island Children’s Museum, 11 Davis Avenue, Garden City. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Museum admission: $10 for adults and children over 1 year old, $9 seniors, free to museum members and children under 1 year old. Additional fees for theater and special programs may apply. Irish American Society Social Gatherings
The Irish American Society, 297 Willis Avenue, Mineola will hold social gatherings every Monday from noon to 3 p.m. Bring a Big Mac or a sandwich and start your week off with a smile. Ask a friend who wants to step out or needs to get out for a few hours to come along. Games, surprise prizes, entertainment, music, information, cakes, tea, coffee and news. New Hyde Park/Garden City Park School Board to Meet
The regular board meeting of the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Board of Education will take place at Manor Oaks School at 6:30 p.m. It is anticipated that a motion to adjourn to Executive Session will be made immediately after the opening of the public portion of the meeting for board training and to discuss matters involving particular personnel and matters within the attorney-client relationship. The regular meeting will resume at 8 p.m. All are invited to attend.
Herricks School Board to Hold Meeting
The Herricks School Board will hold its meeting at 7:15 p.m. at Herricks Community Center, 999 Herricks Road, New Hyde Park. At this meeting it is anticipated that the tax levy will be set.
From Props to Jets Lecture at Cradle of Aviation Museum
The Cradle of Aviation Museum will be presenting a special book signing and lecture with Long Island Author Michael Machat on at 7 p.m. An accomplished aviation journalist and photographer, Mr. Machat will be discussing the rise and dominance of commercial airliners that began after World War II and captured the imagination of the public. Using archival photography and vintage airline memorabilia to capture the “feel” of that time period Mr. Machat will take a look at pioneering aircraft like the Douglas DC-7, Lockheed Constellation and Boeing Stratocruiser as well as turbojets like the Boeing 707, Douglas DC-8 and the Convair 880. Born and raised in Rockville Centre, Mr. Machat spent much of his time fascinated by the growth of commercial aviation at New York’s Idlewild Airport (JFK International). An accomplished artist, Mr. Machat has two paintings at the Smithsonian. He is an aviation journalist and editor of WINGS and AIRPOWER magazine. St. Aidan’s Summer Stage Returns with Production of Oklahoma
St. Aidan’s Summer Stage returns after a 17-year absence with a production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma on Aug. 20, 21 at 8 p.m. and on Aug. 22 at 2 p.m. The production is located in Msgr. Levels Production Into The Woods
Tickets are available for Levels production of Into the Woods. The Tony award-winning Stephen Sondheim musical explores the darker side of fairy tales, explaining what happens after “happily ever after” in the lives of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella and Rapunzel.
Levels, the Great Neck Library’s cultural center for teenagers located at 159 Bayview Avenue, presents several theatrical productions a year, all directed, produced and performed by students seventh grade through college-age. Laughter Yoga Has Erupted in New Hyde Park
At “Spinner’s Grinners” Laughter Yoga Club, members take part in a series of laughter, breathing and playfulness exercises with many, many health benefits.
