Women’s and Men’s Soccer Teams to Compete in
Supervisor’s Cup and Supervisor’s Challenge
Centre Island Beach will be the stage for the Supervisor’s Cup, an NCAA Division 1 Women’s College Soccer Showdown and Soccer Festival on Saturday, Aug. 21, at 7 p.m., according to Town Supervisor John Venditto. Hofstra University and Marist University Women’s Soccer Teams will square off and showcase some the area’s best female soccer talent. Admission is free, but those in attendance are asked to bring two cans of food to support Island Harvest and the fight against hunger.
“Soccer is an extremely popular sport, and the talented women of the Hofstra Pride and Marist Red Foxes take it to a whole other level of excitement,” said Venditto. “This game coming to the Town represents the widespread appeal of the sport. It should be very popular with local residents, who enjoy seeing soccer played at a very high level.”
Venditto also encouraged the Town’s young soccer players to participate in the free Youth Clinic featuring Hofstra and Marist Players starting at 4 p.m. Following the clinic will be a free player barbecue. “These Division I programs offer youngsters excellent academic and athletic opportunities.” he said. “We’re proud to host and support this event, which not only provides a healthy outlet for participants, but will entertain sports fans from all over the Town.”
Venditto also commended the staff of the Town’s Parks Department for their ongoing efforts to maintain the Town’s outstanding parks and facilities. “It’s no secret in the local sports community that the Town’s fields are among the finest in the nation,” Venditto said. “The fact that Hofstra and Marist are playing on them is testament to that fact. I feel it is truly a compliment when NCAA Division 1 athletic programs play on our facility. They feature some of the finest athletes in the country.”
The Town of Oyster Bay will also host the Supervisor’s Challenge, a NCAA Division 1 College Soccer Showdown, at John J. Burns Town Park on Merrick Road in Massapequa on Tuesday, August 24, at 7 p.m. The contest, featuring NCAA powers St. John’s University and Hofstra University Men’s Soccer Teams, will showcase some the area’s best soccer talent. Admission is free, but as with the Supervisor’s Cup, attendees are asked to bring two cans of food.
Venditto said he is looking forward to the Supervisor’s Challenge on August 24, which will also feature a free youth clinic, with the players from St. John’s and Hofstra University, and player barbecue prior to the game. These activities will start at 4 p.m. “It will be an outstanding event and I’m proud to be hosting them here in the Town of Oyster Bay,” the Supervisor said. “I hope the residents will come out and support these two outstanding schools.”
