The following are trustee reports from the Aug. 17 Floral Park Village board meeting.
Building Department
Trustee Tweedy reported that during the month of July the Building Department issued 13 building permits, one amended permit, seven plumbing permits, 16 electrical permits, six fence permits and nine miscellaneous permits. The Architectural Review Board heard six new cases and one sign application. There were no cases heard by the Zoning Board of Appeals during the month of July.
Department of Public Works
Trustee Tweedy reported that the Department of Public Works has implemented a new strategy for maintaining village streets. Sub-contractors are not being used as much as DPW crews are performing smaller road repairs in-house such as saw cutting and road subsurface preparation. This is providing the village with a cost-savings.
All DPW employees are wearing reflective bright yellow or orange shirts and safety vests making them easily visible. Trustee Tweedy asked drivers to exercise caution around construction sites by driving slowly for the safety of all DPW crews. Trustee Tweedy wished everyone in the village family and all residents a happy Labor Day.
Covert Avenue Chamber of Commerce
Trustee Longobardi reported that Covert Avenue Chamber of Commerce is currently planning its annual street fair to be held on Saturday, Oct. 16, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The street fair will feature the businesses of Covert Avenue, guest merchants, games, rides and local bands. The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter will also be on hand with pets to adopt.
Family Fun Day at Belmont Park
Trustee Longbardi reported that the second annual Family Fun Day at Belmont Park will be held on Sunday, Oct. 10, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Trustee Longobardi thanked Charles Haywood, president of NYRA, Joanne Adams, NYRA’s director of public relations, and Michael Billows, manager of Centerplate Catering for NYRA, for their generous donations in making this day possible. The Floral Park Chamber of Commerce and the Covert Avenue Chamber of Commerce are both helping to plan this event, which will include a fun-filled day of horse racing, great food from local restaurants and activities for all ages. In addition, the Floral Park Art League will host its annual fall show at Belmont Park that day. Local artists will display works of art for viewing and sale. Belmont Park, in conjunction with the Cradle of Aviation Museum, will be hosting a celebration of flight commemorating the 100th anniversary of the first plane flight from Belmont Park. A number of activities are being planned for children and adults.
Mayor’s Report
Mayor Greene recognized the Department of Public Works, Trustee Tweedy and Sumperintendent of Public Works Steve Siwinski for the new road program. Mayor Greene said this is a wonderful new program being implemented by dedicated DPW staff and will result in a savings to taxpayers. Mayor Greene said he had the opportunity to see the road crews at work and that they are doing an impressive job.
Mayor Greene said he had the opportunity to attend the pool awards ceremony on Monday, Aug. 16 and that the Pirates once again had a very successful season. Mayor Greene thanked Recreation Director Kurt Meyfohrt and Pool Director Tom Dillon, along with all the high school and college students who work at the pool and do a fantastic job.
On motion by Trustee Tomecki, seconded by Trustee Tweedy and carried unanimously, Mayor Kevin Greene recessed the meeting at 8:55 p.m.
