Joe Morris Wins the Sands Point Sprint for Feinstein Institute Feinstein Institute Sprint

Joe Morris, a 19-year-old Farmingdale speedster, steadily pulled away from defending Sands Point Sprint champion William Slattery of Garden City to score an eight second victory in the Sands Point Sprint for the Feinstein Institute on Saturday, Aug. 14. Morris’s winning time was a race record of 17:14, breaking Jon Cuomo’s race record set in 2007 of 17:21.

Leading the way for the women was 30-year-old Anna McCusker with a time of 19:40. Kathleen Calahan Fodor of Northport came in second and Shari Klarfeld of Plainview came in third.

Also coming home with an award was veteran Farmingdale athlete Joan Ackerman, who earned first place honors among the women in the 70-74 Age Group.

Greater Long Island Running Club (GLIRC) Race Director Abe Bernstein ensured a successful event, his way of saying “thank you” to the people from the NSLIJ Feinstein Institute who got him back on his feet and running after a bout with Lymphoma. Genentech returned as a key sponsor for this year’s event.

Special thanks go to the “Friends of the Sands Point Preserve” for making the beautiful facility available for the event, and to the preserve’s manager, Matthew Rocchio for his enthusiastic cooperation.
