The 2010 PAL Flag Football season kicked off on Sunday, Sept. 12 at Woodward Parkway Field and Allen Park in Farmingdale. This year’s Opening Day festivities were centered on fundraising for local resident and leukemia patient, Jake Amato. Hundreds of flag football parents and friends opened their hearts and extended charity in support of Jake and his family.
Week 2 Highlights
Pee Wee 3: The Ravens are off to a great start. Steven Keller, Ryan Hajko, and Owen Hemminger led the defense with several third down stops. Steven Maggio ran for his first touchdown of the season. Sean Carroll threw for two touchdowns controlling the offense. Nicholas Tedesco had three touchdowns and an interception in the Ravens first win of the year.
Pee Wee 4: The Bears made an amazing comeback on Sunday, Sept 19. After being down 18-0 in the second quarter. They came back to take a 22-18 lead by the half. The Bears sealed it on another long TD run by Justin Reece for a 34-24 final. Tommy Maroldo had a solid performance in his debut at quarterback throwing for two TD’s and came up with a game saving flag pull just before the first down conversion. Jonathan Feldman came up big with a TD catch and run and an interception for the tough Bear defense.
The Falcons had a good game against the Bears with Matthew Widmer going the length of the field for touchdown from a Nicky Demers pass. Nicky had a great run for a touchdown and then threw his second touchdown to Greg Olsen for the first of two touchdowns. Daniel Reichert threw Greg his second one later in the game. Greg also had a nice interception with Garrett Delmarco making a great play knocking the ball loose for an incompletion.
Junior Varsity 5: The 5th grade Giants are off to a 2-0 start. They beat the Steelers in week 1 and Cowboys in week 2. Anthony Tedesco led the offensive charge throwing touchdown passes to Billy Petersen, Andrew Needham, James Tedesco, and Brody Agres. Nick Pierro and Eddie Brown led the defensive charge putting tremendous pressure on the Cowboys, holding the offense to two scores.
Junior Varsity 6: Although the Raiders lost 42-27, the team played well and showed great effort. Chris Natale threw two touchdown passes to Nick Carbone, and also one to E.J. Pluguez.
The Cowboys and Jets came to play from the opening series, with the half-time score being 8-0, Jets. Sean McCann and Connor McCann led the defense with Sean picking off three passes and Connor making the QB’s life miserable with his unrelenting rushing. Matt McCarthy and Tom Weber led the offense with Jesse Nicolich making a shoe-string touchdown catch to give the Cowboys a well deserved win. Liam and Corey added great plays to seal the victory!
The following are team notes of the sports activities in Week One:
Grasshoppers: The Ravens played an impressive opening game against the Falcons. Chris Kosinski scored two touchdowns on long runs. Dillon Mehta and Matthew Cangelosi both scored on long passes. The Ravens had an all around strong rushing game with Tyler Buyes, Jake Hajako and Joey Kearney all contributing with big plays.
Pee Wee 4: The Ravens opened with a close game against the Giants. On their first play QB Brandon Carbone connected with Brian Hayden for a touchdown. The Giants responded with a touchdown on their first possession and then the defenses took over. The Ravens defense got key flag pulls from Michael Barletta and Alex Hajko and an interception by Danny Conti. Christian Scalia, Matt Nocerino and Tommy Moccia led the Ravens pass rush; The Ravens scored their second touchdown on an end-to-end run by Brandon Carbone with Danny Conti running in the 2-point conversion. The Giants scored once more and were going for the tie but the Ravens defense held strong to end the game with a 14-13 win.
The Bears won their week one game 33-20 in a game that was much closer than the final score. Down 20-18 with 50 seconds left the Bears Justin Reece ran a long touchdown run off of a statue of liberty play, which he personally called. Luke Centauro, and Connor Zanelotti scored touchdown runs to help the offensive cause. Mario Febbraro led the Bear defense by grabbing several flags and Jack Macaluso had a big interception to end the game.
The Pee Wee Falcons had a big day versus the Jets with Nicky Demers starting the scoring with a long touchdown run. Nicky then went on to throw three touchdown passes with Jake Dominicci, Jevon Evans, Frank Gatto, Cody Nelson, Gregory Olsen, Daniel Reichert all finding the endzone for TDs or extra points. The Falcons played shutdown defense after a shaky start holding the Jets to two scores with interceptions by Demers, Gatto and Reichert. The defensive play of the day came when Matthew Widmer ran the length of the field to pull a flag on the two yard line which ended up being a TD saving play with the Jets unable to punch in from first and goal!
Junior Varsity 5: The Saints won their home opener 19-6. James Cavanagh threw two touchdown passes to Peter Viskoc and Jimmy Hickey rushed for a touchdown. The Saints defense was great, as they didn’t give up any points. There was great play on defense especially from Mark Backich and Luke Brunswick.
The 5th grade Giants are off to a great start. The Giants beat the Steelers 18-12. James Tedesco, Billy Petersen, and Andrew Needham led the offense. Anthony Tedesco threw for two touchdowns leading an unstoppable passing attack. Eddie Brown and Brody Agres played an amazing center defense, holding the high-powered Steelers to one offensive touchdown. Nicholas Pierro did an amazing rushing job putting a tremendous amount of pressure on the quarterback. The Giants are off to a good start and look forward to a great season.
The 5th grade Cowboys opened the 2010 season with an impressive 18-6 victory over the Cardinals. Our quarterback Kevin McMahon anchored the powerful offense, which was led by Dylan Scire who scored two touchdowns. Gregory Pandaliano had a big interception on the first defensive stand of the game. Joe Kosinski opened the second half with a long touchdown reception. Danny Keller and Matthew Calderone had all around strong games with big passes and key receptions. Anthony Speciale, Bret Cotov and Ed Makhanlall all had big runs.
Junior Varsity 6: The Cowboys came out shooting to start the season. They came up against a very fast Cardinals team, but never gave up, a sign of a never quitting football team. Although the team came up short, there were good signs that we will be competitive during the season.
It was a fantastic start to the season as the Raiders beat the Bengals 18-6. In the first half, John Allen Feiner and Chris Natale both had running touchdowns. In the second half, Nick Carbone threw a touchdown pass to Chris Natale. The Raiders’ defense played well with quick flag pulling by E.J. Pluguez, Will Hroch, John Melfa, Evan Tinkler, and Nick Milianta.
The Saints faced off against the Jets, and it was a hard fought battle. The Saints started off slow but came back strong. Chris Stauber and Christian Capobianco made tremendous catches and runs. Nick “Golden Arm” Cappellino made some excellent passes as well as great runs from Ryan Marcis and Sam Croes. Chris Stauber was presented with the game ball.
The Giants kicked off a new season against a tough Ravens team with a hard fought 34-27 win. The Giant offense showed up in the opening game with Tyler Moloney ripping off three TD runs and Jack Livingston hooking up with Sean Moloney on two long TD passes. Liam Byrne turned in some exciting runs for big yardage and Sebi D’Aguanno and Michael McKnight each had big receptions to keep Giant drives alive. On D for the Big Blue it was Tyler Denien and Michael Giovanniello keeping the pressure on the Ravens offense all game.
Varsity 10: After jumping out to a 12-0 lead, the 10th grade Saints fell to the Steelers 32-12. It was touchdown passes from Jake Dickinson to both PJ Spadalik and Chris Witt that had given the Saints that initial 12-0 lead. Joe DiLauro led the Saints on defense with an impressive 5 sacks.
