Join in Musical Fun at Long Island Children’s Museum

The Children’s Museum welcomes artists from the Richmond Indigenous Gourd Orchestra for an afternoon of lively music and a fun workshop. Visitors are invited to create their own instruments using gourds and then join in a musical celebration in the LICM Theater.

Please Note: The Children’s Museum will be closed until Sept. 24 for their annual Fall Fix-Up

Back to School Book Charms

Saturday, September 25 from 2-4 p.m.

Going back to school doesn’t have to be boring! Here at the Museum, you’ll enjoy adding a special type of book to your growing list of school supplies—a miniature book. Come assemble and decorate back to school book charms to mark this exciting time. All ages. Free with museum admission.

Performance September 26, 2 p.m.  

It’s harvest time on Long Island and we’re having a musical celebration in the theater. Join in the fun with our friends from the Richmond Indigenous Gourd Orchestra as they perform instruments created from gourds!  Ages: 3 and up. Fee: $4 with museum admission ($3 LICM members), $8 for theater only.

The New Hyde Park Village will hold its Annual Street Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Jericho Turnpike will be closed from New Hyde Park Road to Covert Avenue for this premier street fair.

Dahlia Flower Show at Planting Fields

On Sept. 25 and 26 head to Planting Fields Arboretum’s Burns Conference Center for the Mid Island Dahlia Society’s Dahlia Show, noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. on  Sunday. The show features a  dazzling display of dahlias to enjoy, dahlia experts to answer your questions, and magnificent bouquets that you can purchase.  Admission: free with Planting Fields $8 parking fee. Oompahfest/Schuetzenfest at Plattduetsche Park

Ompahfest/Schuetzenfest is planned at Plattduetsche Park, 1132 Hempstead Turnpike, Franklin Square. Lots of German music throughout the day, along with German food, beer and entertainment, games, raffles and shooting at the rifle range for prizes. Williston Park Village Board to Meet

 

The Williston Park Village Board will hold its monthly meeting at 8 p.m. at village hall, 494 Willis Avenue, Williston Park.  Please note:  The Williston Park Village Board usually holds its monthly meetings on the third Monday of the month, but this month is an exception.

Water Authority of Western Nassau County to Meet

The next regular meeting of the Water Authority of Nassau County Board of Directors will be held at their offices, 58 South Tyson Avenue, Floral Park at 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

Combined New Hyde Park Chamber and Lions Club Golf Outing

The New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club will again sponsor a golf outing to be held at the Clearview Golf Course in Queens. Dinner will be held at the Inn of New Hyde Park.  The proceeds to be used for the following:  Greater NHP Chamber, HP Gladiator Fund, Police Athletic League, Area High School Scholarship Funds, Holiday Gift Certificates for the Needy and Ronald McDonald House.  Prior to the shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. there will be a barbecue lunch at 11:30 a.m.  Dinner will follow with cocktails at 6 p.m. and with dessert, awards and prizes at 8 p.m.  For further information and reservations, please contact Ralph Ventura at 466-9207.

Tee Off To Fight Hunger/Homelessness at Inn’s Golf Classic

The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network) will hold its 15th annual Golf Classic at the Middle Bay Country Club in Oceanside.  This year The INN has selected to honor Angelo Mangia of Standard Funding Corp. and Ian Weinberg of Family Wealth & Pension Management LLC.  Close friends of The INN, both Mangia and Weinberg have donated their time and efforts to help the organization execute its mission of serving hungry and homelessness Long Islanders.  Both are generous supporters of The INN, sponsor meals, and have volunteered at the Mary Brennan INN, The INN’s soup kitchen located in Hempstead.  Daylong festivities include brunch, golfing, cocktails, dinner, raffles, and a live auction.  For information on participation or sponsorships, visit our website at www.the-inn.org.  For additional information please contact Nora Bealey at (516) 486-8506 ext. 108 or e-mail: nbealey@the-inn.org.

Holy Spirit Church to Hold Defensive Driving Course

Holy Spirit Church, 500 Jericho Turnpike, New Hyde Park, will offer a Defensive Driving Course, sponsored by the National Safety Council.  The class hours will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The cost is $45.  At the completion of this course participants will receive a 10 percent reduction in the liability and collisions portions of their insurance premiums and it will also remove four points from their driving record.  Hopefully, the information gained will help prevent collisions.  For information and registration please call (631) 360-9720.

Winthrop University Perinatal Holds “Walk to Remember”

Winthrop-University Hospital’s Perinatal Bereavement Team will host its Seventh Annual “Walk to Remember” on October 2 at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. This annual memorial event, the only walk of its kind on Long Island, provides a special opportunity for parents, relatives and friends who have lost a child due to pregnancy complications to walk in remembrance of their loved one. A donation of $15 per person is suggested; children under 12 years of age may participate for free.

Washington Street School PTA to Hold Annual Fall Festival

The Washington Street School PTA in Franklin Square is holding their Annual Fall Festival on Saturday, October 2 from 11 a.m.  to 4 p.m. (rain or shine). It is being held at the school at 760 Washington Street. This will be a great family fun day featuring games, prizes, raffles, fun activities, hair braiding, face painting, radio control cars, pumpkins and more. Delicious foods, drinks, snacks and baked goods will also be available. Laughter Yoga Has Erupted In New Hyde Park

 

At “Spinner’s Grinners” Laughter Yoga Club, members take part in  a series of laughter, breathing and playfulness exercises with many, many health benefits.  You don’t have to be happy, you don’t have to be funny, you don’t even need a sense of humor!   Everyone can do this!  No joke!  We will not be laying on the floor and no knowledge of yoga is necessary.  All activities are done either sitting or standing. Cyber Bullies, Sexting: Nassau Bar to Hold Free Seminar

 

Technologically-advanced school yard bullies use the tools of the 21st century, such as laptops, cell phones and smart phones, to target and harass their victims. To help parents protect their youngsters from abusive relations and to deter these “cyber bullies,” the Nassau County Bar Association is presenting a free public education seminar from 7 p.m. at NCBA’s headquarters, 15th and West Streets, Mineola. Among the topics to be discussed include: the potential dangers of posting pictures, videos, and personal information online: sexual predators, pornographers, identity thieves and cyber bullies. Town to Host LI Conservatory Music/Smorgasbord of Deserts

North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman and the North Hempstead town board invite all residents to an “Autumn Treat;” an evening of classical music by the Long Island Conservatory of Music followed by a smorgasbord of deserts. The Oct. 8 event to be held at Harbor Links Golf Course off West Shore Road in Port Washington and kicks off at 7 p.m.The Albertson-based Long Island Conservatory will present an evening of romantic classical music featuring performances by the conservatory’s ensemble of faculty and students. In addition to an array of deserts, coffee, teas and apple cider will also be served. Temple Tikvah to Hold Rummage Sale

Temple Tikvah, the The Center For Reform Judaism, 3315 Hillside Avenue. New Hyde Park will hold a rummage sale today and  tomorrow.  Temple Tikvah formally known as Temple Emanuel of New Hyde Park and Temple Israel of Jamaica will hold its annual rummage sale today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and October 11 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon. Highlights this year include costume jewelry, watches, pocket books, clothes, shoes, books and household items. Vintage fashion finds and great bargains.

Vendors are wanted for a two-day Christmas Fair to be held at the Holy Spirit R.C. Church Auditorium, 13 South 6th Street, New Hyde Park for Nov. 13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and for Nov. 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Vendors fee for two days is $75.  Only new merchandise wanted.  For details call 294-9837.
