Concert

The First Presbyterian Church, E. Main St., welcome sGrammy Award winner Paul Sullivan in a concert for one night only at 7:30 p. m. Mr. Sullivan has enjoyed a richly varied and distinguished career as a composer and a pianist. As a soloist, with his trio, and as a member of the Paul Winter Consort, he has played concert tours in most of the United States and Europe, as well as Croatia, Israel, Costa Rica, and Japan. Tickets are $15 to support the youth group. Call 922-5477.

Walk in the Woods

With the North Shore Land Alliance. Space is limited. Registration recommended. To register and for directions call 626-0908 or andrea@northshorelandalliance.org. Oct. 2: William Cullen Bryant Preserve, Roslyn Harbor. Explore the fascinating Pinetum with botanist Andrew Greller, who knows as much as anyone about this strange place. There will be a lunch break so take a lunch and if time allows, stroll through the goldenrod and fall asters nearby. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Nature Walk

Muttontown Preserve will host a two-hour guided walk at 10 a.m. During the “Fall Wildflowers” hike, an experienced guide will provide spectacular views of the main field, which offers the color of fall flowers. Enrollment for the hike ($5) is limited and preregistration is required by calling 571-8500 weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The hike will begin at the Bill Paterson Nature Center on the preserve, Muttontown Ln., south of 25A, East Norwich.

Golf Outing

There is still time to sign up for one of the most exciting fun-filled events planned by the Oyster Bay Republican Club. The club is running its 14th Annual Golf Outing at the Brookville Country Club. This event is open to men and women. Non-golfers can also participate by attending the cocktail hour and dinner. Enjoy 18 holes of golf as well as breakfast, cocktail reception, dinner, prizes and more. The day begins at 9 a.m. with registration and breakfast. Tee-off with shotgun starts begins at 10:30 a.m. The registration fee is $300 for golf; $100 for cocktails and dinner only. Checks for this outing should be made payable to the Oyster Bay Republican Club, Inc. and mailed to P.O. Box 6, Oyster Bay, NY 11771. For more information, call 624-VOTE.

Basketball Program

The Incorporated Village of Bayville is starting up the evening Basketball Program at the Bayville Intermediate School. It starts today and ends April 14. Monday and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. with adult supervision. If school is closed there is no basketball. Open to Bayville residents only.

Friends of the Bay Lecture Series

The popular lecture series will resume with Matt Sclafani, Ph.D., of Cornell University Cooperative Extension giving “An overview of the New York Horseshoe Crab Monitoring Network.” This presentation will provide an overview of the volunteer horseshoe crab monitoring network that is used for conservation management in the NYS Marine District. The life history, ecology and management issues that surround this ancient animal as well as some data from the survey, will also be presented. Horseshoe crabs have changed little in the last 250 million years. They are fascinating creatures. Lectures are held at 2 Townsend Square (111 South St.) and begin promptly at 7:30. Free and open to the public. Donations in support of the lecture series and other programs are encouraged.

Art Walks

“First Thursdays Night On The Town” features art, food, wine, and music. Other businesses and sites in town will be displaying artwork. Local restaurants will be exhibiting art and are offering a percentage off on meals, wine tastings and more. Live music entertainment is scheduled. Cafes and restaurants will remain open late for dessert and coffee. Also on Nov. 4 and Dec. 2.

Fall Harvest Festival

Mill Neck Family’s Fall Harvest Festival brings the best of the autumn season to LI. This year’s festival, to be held on Oct. 9 and 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 40 Frost Mill Rd., Mill Neck, promises to be better than ever. Visitors enjoy a wide variety of apples and opportunities to learn about the deaf, the Mill Neck Family of Organizations and its services. Also featuring country crafts, seasonable produce, a Cheese House, baked goods, jellies, fudge and strudels. The “Country Store” features a full-line of famous Karl Ehmer wurst and bacon products. The “Gourmet Shop” offers fine snacks and apple cider. In the children’s activities area, Gooseberry Grove will have games and activities. Facepainting will be held on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 pm. Author Nick Katsoris will read in the pumpkin patch with his character “Loukoumi” from his celebrated Loukoumi’s Good Deeds and Loukoumi’s Gift books on Saturday from noon to 3 pm. Maureen Sullivan and illustrator Alison Josephs will also read their books in the pumpkin patch on Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. Sportscaster and author Len Berman will discuss and autograph his new book, The Greatest Baseball Players of All Time, from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday (rain date Sunday noon to 3 pm.) Other activities include a hearing van featuring free hearing screenings from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and a 50/50 raffle. Call 628-4231.

Long Island Baroque Ensemble

Opens its 41st season with “Magical Melodies,” concert combining the voices of two violins, a tenor, violoncello and harsichord. A rarely heard cantata by Nicolaus Bruhns will be performed along with three arias by J.S. Bach and sonatas for two violins and continuo. Core ensemble members performing on this program are Michael Brown, tenor; Anca Nicolau, and Aaron Brown, violin; Myron Lutzke, violoncello; and Sonia Gezairlian Grib, harpsichord. 3 p.m. at Christ Church, 61 E.
