Belle Santora Knows Oyster Bay
Belle Santora called to identify the mystery picture in the Nov. 18 issue of the Enterprise Pilot.
She said, “The mystery picture is the race at the Oyster Festival.” She is correct. The Oyster Festival Supervisor’s 5K run goes up South Street and that is where the picture was taken!
Belle Santora always has interesting stories to tell and she shared one with us. “When I was in grade school, maybe eight or nine, my mother did her shopping at the A&P and bought a dozen eggs. I helped her unpack them, and written on one of them was ‘Please write to me, Georgie Dillon of Kinmundy, Illinois’ so I wrote to her. I did that kind of thing… and I got a letter back. And she sent a letter back. By the third time she wrote, ‘I’m sorry to disappoint you but I’m a girl and not a boy.’ So we wrote to each other all through grade school.
“We corresponded past high school. She was an only child. I think when I moved up here in 1953 [to East Norwich] I finally called her up on the telephone. Her mother said, ‘She’s up the road a piece and I have to get her.’ Georgie called the next day. That’s how rural it was.
“My brother-in-law was located in Scott Field, Illinois during WWII and for the holidays and I told him about Georgie and he contacted her and the family invited him for the holidays. Her father and mother came to get him at the station and he did get to meet her. Isn’t that unbelievable.
“I never got to meet her but I knew all about her,” said Belle. Returning to talk of the mystery pictures, she said, “I hope I’m right. Sometimes I’m wrong.” FYI: she is correct!
So there is another wonderful mystery picture story for you to share with your loved ones over Thanksgiving.
Happy guessing and happy answering the Mystery Picture.
