Oyster Bay Rough Riders Won 25 to 7 vs. Babylon
November 28, 2010… this date will long be remembered in the annals of Oyster Bay Rough Riders Football history. It is the date on which the Oyster Bay Rough Riders Football program won their first super bowl victory in the Nassau Suffolk Football League.
The Oyster Bay Rough Riders Pee Wee team with a final record of 8 wins, 3 losses and 1 tie, secured their first Super Bowl victory by dismantling Babylon’s defense with consistent yardage coupled with a few long touchdown runs and a sterling defense that limited Babylon’s offense to minimal yardage and one touchdown.
Oyster Bay, albeit missing three of their players (Tighe Mullarkey, Logan Iles and Zhane Mabina), deferred on the coin toss and Babylon chose to receive the opening kickoff. Oyster Bay held them on 4 downs, with crushing tackles by Colby Zino, Sal Mangano, Joey Halpin, Jake Van Velsor, PJ Verdi and Michael Moore forcing Babylon to punt.
Oyster Bay’s first time on offense had Kyle Marshall (135 yards rushing on 9 carries 1TD in the game; 1,372 yards rushing on 84 carries (16.33 yards a carry), 13 touchdowns for the season) scampering on a right side sweep for 42 yards, to be tackled at the 12 yard line. Key blocks from Michael Panella, Sal Mangano and Colby Zino allowed Luke Paniagua (133 yards rushing on 8 carries, 3 touchdowns in the game; 1,574 yards rushing on 99 carries (15.9 yards a carry) and 23 touchdowns for the season, with an additional 66 yards receiving) to score the first touchdown for Oyster Bay from 12 yards out on a left end sweep.
Babylon’s second possession produced few yards as the balance of Oyster Bay’s defense contributed to stopping the run. Bryce Kipnes, Izzy Silver, Quinn Mullaney, Jack Croke and Louis Singe limited Babylon’s offense to 4 downs again. Babylon punted.
In Oyster Bay’s second possession, Michael Moore (QB) ran to perfection the sweep play allowing Kyle Marshall to score his first touchdown of the game (24 yards) and give Oyster Bay a 12 – 0 lead. Oyster Bay held Babylon on their next 2 possessions and with 3 minutes left in the 2nd Quarter, Oyster Bay’s Offense went to work again. With Babylon’s defense reacting to Oyster Bay’s sweeps by moving their key players to the outside, this allowed Oyster Bay to score their third touchdown of the game. Luke Paniagua received the ball on a dive play (a run up the middle) and bulled his way through for a 25 yard touchdown run. Key blocks by Joey Halpin (center) and Sal Mangano paved the way.
Oyster Bay went up 19 – 0 with under 2 minutes remaining in the first half. Babylon opened their next set of downs at their 40 yard line. An off tackle run by Kevin Mroczka, number 50, of Babylon cutting back against the grain scored what would be Babylon’s first and only touchdown of the game. Score at halftime: Oyster Bay 19 – Babylon 7.
The second half showcased a great defensive effort by both teams. It wasn’t until about 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter that Luke Paniagua scored his third touchdown of the game for Oyster Bay on another dive play going 42 yards for the score. This run sealed the victory of Oyster Bay with a final score of: 25 – 7.
