The Long Distance Running Committee of USA Track & Field’s Long Island Association has selected the Oyster Bay Town Supervisor’s 5 Kilometer Run as the Association 5 Kilometer Championship race for 2011.
The Oyster Bay Town Supervisor’s Run has been an increasingly successful fixture on the Long Island running calendar for the past 27 years, and in recent years has developed into perhaps the single most competitive 5 Kilometer race on Long Island. The 2010 edition of the Run was won by 27-year-old Massapequa speedster Chris Mammone in 15 minutes, 21 seconds. It was the second year in a row that Mammone, who runs competitively for the Bellmore Striders has won the Town Supervisor’s Run, and he holds the course and race record of 14:43 which he set in 2009. Twenty-eight-year-old Leonora Petrina of the Sayville Running Company Team was the 2010 Women’s winner, setting a women’s course and race record of 17:14 in the process.
“Naming the Oyster Bay Town Supervisor’s 5 Kilometer Run as our Championship for 2011 was a relatively easy choice for us,” observed USATF-Long Island President Alex Cuozzo. “It is an incredibly competitive event, and already draws a large field of competitive runners in every age group, and has the kind of Governmental and business support that makes it a perfect fit for our championship event.”
The 2011 edition of the Run will be held on Saturday, Oct. 15, and will once again be conducted under the auspices of the Town of Oyster Bay and its Supervisor John Venditto. The presenting sponsor will once again be the prominent law firm of Sahn Ward Coschignano & Baker, PLLC.
The two supporting sponsors are South Shore Outdoor, the Bay Shore firm that specializes in screen-printed and embroidered apparel and team uniforms, and The Runner’s Edge, the Farmingdale-based running store that has been proudly serving the local running and triathlon communities for over 25 years. Event management will be under the direction of the Greater Long Island Running Club.

Entry forms to the 2011 Oyster Bay Town Supervisor’s 5 Kilometer Run will be available in August and can be obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay Department of Parks and the Greater Long Island Running Club. Online registration will be open in early August at wwwglirc.org.
