In a surprise move Friday afternoon, Twitter suspended the rights of UberMedia’s third-party applications to host tweets.
Most widely known for UberTwitter, a popular twitter client for smartphones, UberMedia was shut down Friday for what
Twitter describes as a violation of their API rules.
API is short for Application Programming Interface. API is what allows third-party clients to interact with the Twitter universe, allowing for people to post to and read tweets without going to the twitter.com website.
The move came as a shocker, as UberTwitter and twidroyd, another application created by UberMedia, are two very popular Twitter clients.
In a statement on their support website, Twitter says that they usually suspend hundreds of API violations a week, but usually, these applications apply to only a handful of individuals.
In the mean time, Twitter has provided links on their support site to the official Twitter clients for the iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry devices. There is no timetable on a return for UberTwitter.
A Press reporter attempted to access UberTwitter on their Blackberry and a notification popped up saying “Invalid.”
