From Africa to America Presented by Aspiring Young Artists

A 1 and 3 p.m. celebrate the roots of popular American dance with performers of Aspiring Young Artists (A.Y.A.) of West Hempstead. The company will be performing dance styles from West Africa and the Caribbean.  Through these demonstrations, the audience will be able to see the cultural, historical and global contributions made from the African Diaspora. Come enjoy this jubilant and colorful celebration of life through rhythm and movement! Ages: 3 and up. Fee: $4 with museum admission ($3 LICM members), $8 theater only.  All activities will be held at the Long Island Children’s Museum, 11 Davis Avenue, Garden City. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Museum admission: $10 for adults and children over 1 year old. Under 1-year-old free. $9 seniors. New Hyde Park Republican Club to Meet

The Greater New Hyde Park Republican Club will hold its meeting at Marcus Christ Hall, adjacent to New Hyde Park Village Hall, (corner of Jericho Turnpike and New Hyde Park Road) on February 28 at 7:30 p.m. Guest speaker will be Lee Tu, who will discuss “Town of North Hempstead Update.”  Refreshments will be served.  All are welcome.

Supermarket Bingo Fundraiser

The New Hyde Park North Lions Club will hold a Supermarket Bingo Fundrasiser at the Clinton G. Polar Plunge at North Hempstead Beach Park

Special Olympics New York will be hosting its 7th Annual North Hempstead Beach Park Polar Plunge fundraiser sponsored by the Town of North Hempstead. Polar Plunge is the premier pledge based fundraising event statewide for Special Olympics New York and allows them to provide year round sports training and competition for over 48,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities.  If Polar Plunge seems like something you’d like to get involved with or you would like to put a team together, please call 254-1465 ext. 10 or register online at sony.kintera.org/NorthHempstead LongIsland. The plunge will take place at North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington.  Polar Plunge is a unique pledge event that has become the premier annual fundraiser of Special Olympics New York. Participants raise money for the athletes of Special Olympics New York by asking family, friends, co-workers, etc. to support their efforts in “Freezin’ for a Reason.” Then, take the plunge into the chilly waters. Every Plunger that raises $100 receives an official Plunge sweatshirt. Raise more money and receive more great prizes. Plungers can create their own Plunge Web Page so that friends, family and co-workers can visit and donate right online. More than 6,000 plungers and 15,000 spectators were a part of the 2009-2010 Plunge Season, raising nearly $1 million statewide.

Defensive Driving Course at Holy Spirit in New Hyde Park

The church of the Holy Spirit, 500 Jericho Turnpike, New Hyde Park, is offering a Defensive Driving Course sponsored by the National Safety Council.  The hours will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the cost is $45.  With the course participants will receive a 10 percent reduction in the liability and collisions portions of their insurance premium.  It will also remove up to four points from their driving record.  Hopefully, the information gained will help prevent collisions. Planting and Maintaining Trees and Shrubs at Clark Garden

At 1 p.m. at Clark Garden, 193 I. U. Willets Road, Albertson will hold a Fireside Chat by John Deignan on how to plant and maintain trees and shrubs.  Beginning with tips for properly selecting plants from nurseries, the talk will progress with site selection, soil preparation, transplanting and drainage issues.  Important tasks from watering, mulching, staking, pruning and fertilization to insect and disease control will be covered in order to provide professionals and hobbyists with knowledge to ensure that their trees and shrubs flourish and thrive.  Fee is $8 for members; $10 for non-members and refreshments will be served.  Early registration is urged.

Dahlia Club Meeting and Class

At the 7 p.m. Dahlias 101 class we’ll teach you how to create a successful dahlia garden. We will discuss light, spacing, soil requirements, and how to choose dahlias most suitable to growing conditions on Long Island. The Board of Trustees of the Shelter Rock Public Library will hold their Monthly Board Meeting at 7:30 p.m. at the Albertson Firehouse (2nd Floor), 100 I.U. Willets Rd, Albertson.  The public is invited to attend. The meeting may contain an executive session for discussion of personnel issues.

Root Pruning Workshop

The Bonsai Society of Greater New York, Inc. will host a Root Pruning Workshop at 8 p.m. at Farmindale College Greenhouse.  Resident bonsai artist Vincent Russo Jr. will lead participants through the process of inspecting bonsai for being in a ‘root bound’ condition, and then lead everyone through the process of removing the correct amount of soil and roots and refreshing the planting. These techniques are appropriate for houseplants as well as bonsai.  Please bring a sturdy pair of chopsticks, and a temperate bonsai or a pot bound/root bound houseplant that has been in its container for at least one year.  Soils and instruction will be provided. For the Love of Flowers at Clark Botanic Garden

At 1 p.m. at Clark Botanic Garden, 193 I.U. Willets Road, Albertson, Susan Tiffen will share what she has learned in creating her flower images with Dahlias and other flowers.  She will also include her photographs of the Nessequoque River and Saint James/Smithtown breaches. Come and enjoy her beautiful and informative PowerPoint program and learn how to take beautiful pictures including the flowers at Clark Garden.  Fee is $8 for members. $10 for non-members.  Refreshments served.

Bel Canto Chorale to Perform

Spinners Grinners Laughter Yoga in New Hyde Park

Take time to participate in a series of laughter, breathing and playfulness exercises with many, many health benefits.  You don’t have to be happy, you don’t have to be funny, you don’t even need a sense of humor.
