The Farmingdale High School boys’ swim team recently competed at the Nassau County Championships at Eisenhower Park Aquatic Center and had a total of 28 swims in the preliminary heats, 20 of them were personal bests. The LI Swim Officials Association also honored them as the winner of the Sportsmanship Award.
Senior Greg Carman qualified for the NY State Championships in the 200-freestyle (1:51.51). His third place finish earned him All County Honors.
In the 50 freestyle senior Joe Scaglione was 8th (23.04) and less than one second separated 1st thru 8th place. Senior Tom Gelbach was 20th (24.30). In the 100-freestyle Scaglione finished 5th (50.18) missing the NYS cut time by tenths of a second.
In the 500 freestyle Carman placed 7th (5:12.50) and freshman Vinny Mattei who dropped 10 seconds in Fridays preliminaries, came back with (5:27.98) to finished 17th overall and earn All Conference Honors.
In the 200 freestyle relay: Scaglione (23.50), Gelbach (23.60), Goldshar (24.59) and Carman (24.22) finished 8th (1:35.91).
Also in the 400 freestyle relay: Scaglione (50.55), Gelbach (54.23), Mattei (55.52) and Carman (50.27) were 7th in 3:30.57, while Kris Harris finished 19th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.60.
Carman’s accomplishments lead a substantial list of post-season honors for the Dalers. In addition to their All Division selections for Carman, Scaglione, Gelbach, Mattei and Goldshar, they all earned All Conference II honors by the end of the County Championships. The team finished 10th overall.
Two days earlier Sophomore James Mangione finished 6th overall in the County Diving Championships earning All Conference honors. Senior Billy Specht finished 14th, junior Jon Gonzalez was 22nd and freshman Chris McGlynn finished 25th.
