The Bras Are Back
Benefit Auction for the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program. Over 100 people – artists, breast cancer survivors and family members and others – have made Creative Cups – ordinary bras transformed into works of art, that will be auctioned to benefit the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The creations, although all made from bras, vary greatly. They are poignant, clever or just beautiful. There’s It’s All about Support by breast cancer survivor Jennifer Montgomery of East Rockaway; the folksy Lessons from Lizzie by quilter Mary Stipe of Northport; and Brah Jongg, made of mah jongg tiles, by Jodi Charak of Roslyn Heights. Rima Fakih, Miss USA, created the gorgeous CLEAVopatra bra; WCBS radio personality Pat Farnack did a witty BRAdio; and Mary Ann Mearini’s (Valley Stream) Yogi Bra’rer is autographed by the famous Yankee catcher. Full Frontal Feminism
In celebration of Women’s History Month, Nassau Community College presents Jessica Valenti, who will discuss Full Frontal Feminism: A Young Woman’s Guide to What Matters. The event, which takes place in the College Center Building at 1 p.m., is free, open to the public and accessible to the disabled. Jessica Valenti is the founder and editor of Feministing.com, a news, comment and calls to arms blog that has half-a-million readers a month. She is the author of three books. Cabaret
Presented by Nassau Community College’s Theatre and Dance Department March 17 through 20 and March 23 through 27 at the Mainstage Theatre. This critically acclaimed, ground-breaking 1998 revival of the 1966 Broadway hit follows the play by John Van Druten and the stories by Christopher Isherwood upon which it’s based instead of the original Broadway version. Cabaret vividly portrays the anti-Semitism and repression that marked the rise of the Third Reich. During its six-year run on Broadway, this production brought to the New York stage the raunchy glamour of the Kit Kat Club and new songs from the film version, including Money and Maybe This Time. Performances take place at 8 p.m. except Sunday, when they begin at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15 a person; $12 seniors 55 and over and free for current college students requesting rush tickets. Poetry Event
Molloy College and its Writer-in-Residence, Barbara Novack, will be hosting a poetry event featuring John Amen at 3 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room, Wilbur Arts Center on Molloy College’s Rockville Centre campus. This event is free and open to the public. An open reading will follow the featured poets. John Amen is the author of three books of poetry, and his work has appeared in numerous publications nationally and internationally. The multi-talented Mr. Amen is also a musician (his folk/folk rock music is on two CDs) and an artist working in acrylics on canvas. He travels widely giving readings, doing musical performances and conducting workshops. In addition, he founded and edits The Pedestal Magazine. HIV/AIDS/Sexual Health Awareness Day
In recognition of HIV/AIDS Awareness Week, Nassau Community College will present a series of events addressing the issues surrounding the condition. Admission is free and the public is invited. Fried is a published author who has spoken at over 750 institutions nationally and internationally. His goal is to bring awareness to HIV/AIDS and encourage an open and honest dialogue.

Tattoo Blue to Perform

Talented Teens Sought
The 4th Annual Teen Art, Music and Poetry Festival will be held on April 16 from 1 to 4:30 at the Ethical Humanist Society of LI, 38 Old Country Rd. Talented teens are being sought to participate. Cradle of Aviation Museum
In the world of aviation, signals and coded messages are an important part of how airplanes and air traffic control speak everyday. The Cradle of Aviation Museum has a variety of free family activities. Walk through the eight museum galleries and you’ll walk through over 100 years of aerospace history with 75 planes and space craft and a variety of examples of how pilots navigated and communicated from the early days of flight through the space program. Museum activities are free with admission and are available each day from noon to 4 p.m. The museum also is home to the IMAX Dome Theatre and is located on Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Museum Row. NC Coalition Against Domestic Violence
The Coalition is a member agency of the Garden City Community Fund, United Community Fund of Great Neck, Community Chest of Port Washington and United Way of LI. Call 222-2293 for information the following:
•Support groups with individual counseling for incest survivors and survivors of rape and sexual assault. Services are confidential and free of charge. These services are also extended to family members and partners of survivors.
•The coalition operates a safe home for battered women and their children. The Coalition’s Safe Home for Abused Families provides shelter, advocacy and legal assistance, in a safe, warm, supportive, attractive environment. Call the 24-hour hotline 542-0404. The hotline and all services are free and confidential and a counselor can help you find safety.
•If you are 60 or older and suffering from abuse, mistreatment or neglect at the hands of family members or someone who is living with you, help is available. Epilepsy Foundation

•Free Puppet Show on Seizure Disorder. A free children’s program on epilepsy using the internationally acclaimed “Kids on the Block” troupe of puppets to public and private elementary schools. Exhibit
The Firehouse Plaza Art Gallery, Room 140, College Center Building, Nassau Community College, presents the exhibit Transforming Lives, which runs March 17. The exhibit features photographs of Uganda’s youth taken by artist and activist Stephen Shames of L.E.A.D. (Locate Educate Achieve Dream) Uganda. The nonprofit program collects donations to educate vulnerable children in Uganda. Shames visited Uganda while doing an assignment about AIDS in 2000. As he photographed the funeral of a woman who left behind five children, he formed a special bond with the youngest child, Sarah. Affected by his experience, Shames paid for Sarah’s siblings and other orphans to attend school. This experience inspired him to develop L.E.A.D Uganda in 2004.
