Civil War Program
Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Round Swamp Rd., Old Bethpage, will open its 2011 season by commemorating the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War with a related event. On April 2 and 3, Company “E” of the 14th Brooklyn Regiment, New York State Militia, will conduct its annual “School of the Soldier” program. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. As part of the program, the “soldiers,” dressed in the uniforms of the time, will demonstrate the formations the regiment engaged in during training in 1861, including marching, facings and manual of arms. The officers will also lead the men in company drills each day and conclude with a skirmish drill on Sunday. Call 572-8400.

Pancake Breakfast
The Plainview-Bethpage Lions Club will hold its Annual Pancake Breakfast at The Marriott Residence Inn, 9 Gerhard Rd., Plainview, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. All are welcome to enjoy eggs, sausage, pancakes and more. Adult admission is $10; children under 12 are $5; children under five are free. All proceeds will go toward Autism, Lions Diabetes Camp and John Theissen Children’s Foundation. The Lions are asking for most needed support from members of the community through either attending the breakfast and/or making a contribution. History Alive
April 3, 10, 17, May 1, 8, 15, 22 at Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Round Swamp Rd., Old Bethpage. Children and parents will be able to try their hand at the everyday chores of 19th-century life, including churning fresh cream into butter at the Powell Farmhouse, carding wool at the Benjamin House, assisting in making a hat and sweeping the porch at the General Store with a handmade corn broom. Other aspects of children’s lives will also be covered, including play, involving rolling wooden hoops beside the Noon Inn; and education, with participants having the opportunity to see the School House, where they can write on a slate board.
