Dr. John A. Gable Lecture Series 2011

The Friends of Sagamore Hill holds the 7th Annual Dr. John A. Gable Lecture Series. This program is free to the public and offers the opportunity to both hear and speak with illustrious experts on subjects and people related to our 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt and Oyster Bay history. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the programs begin at 7:20 p.m. at Christ Church Parish Hall, 14 West Main St., Oyster Bay. Following each lecture and brief discussion, light refreshments will be served and the public can meet with the speakers in an informal setting. Each speaker may have published works to be purchased. Program: Melissa Milgrom, author, historian and journalist will present “Taxidermy in the Days of Theodore Roosevelt and Beyond: Museum Builders Replicate Life Under Glass.” The speaker will be weaving images and information about T.R. as it relates to the museum builders in her book Still Life.


Blood Drive

Sponsored by the Locust Valley Rotary Club and the Locust Valley Fire Department will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Locust Valley Firehouse, Buckram Rd. The Automated Red Cell Donation system will be available and allows donors to selectively donate only the blood components that are needed most. The preferred blood types are O positive, O negative, B negative and A negative. All donors benefit from a free mini-medical exam which includes blood pressure, pulse rate, iron count and temperature. Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, between 16 and 75 years of age and in good health and provide valid photo ID. For medical questions and concerns call 1-800-688-0900. Walk-ins welcome.

 The Knitanistas

The main purpose of the group is to create projects for CaretoKnit who then distributes them to the needy. However, you are free to bring personal projects to work on too, so expertise can be shared. It will be a relaxed atmosphere allowing for the free exchange of ideas, experiences, thoughts and fun. If you don’t have supplies they will be provided for you.  Comedy Night

 Passion for Fashion Show

The Mill Neck Family of Organizations, along with the Mill Neck Manor Alumni Association, will host a “Passion for Fashion Show” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the historic Mill Neck Manor House. Wearing the latest designer fashions from the renowned Brooks Brothers line, models will promenade down the manor’s enchanting staircase, and boutiques and jewelry will be available on the first floor. Guests may also partake in stylish and not-to-be missed raffles, a delicious brunch and cocktails. The event fee is $45 per person. Proceeds will benefit the Mill Neck Family of Organizations.  Art Walk First Thursday

Art Walk features an international spectrum of contemporary artists. Get some artistic inspiration as you visit local art galleries. Other businesses and sites in town will be displaying artwork. Local restaurants will be exhibiting art and are offering a percentage off on meals, wine tastings and more. Live music entertainment is scheduled. Cafes and restaurants will remain open late for dessert and coffee. The evening will begin with Chase Edwards Gallery, 15 E. Main St. (802-0655) and continues at Atelier Gallery, 9 E. Main St.; Art (that matters), 55 W. Main St. (917-769-9921); The Teaching Studios of Oyster Bay, 115 Audrey Ave. (971-597-2404); and The Artist Club Gallery, 29 Berry Hill Rd. will also be open. Art will also be available for viewing at various downtown merchants, including Canterbury Ales, Jack Halyards and Wild Honey. The Oyster Bay Main Street Association office (17 Audrey Ave.) will also be displaying the works of local artists, with refreshments served.  Oyster Flix

Anybody remember the old Lyric Movie Theater on Audrey Ave.? It’s been about 30 years since downtown Oyster Bay had a movie theater, but starting in February there will be a modified version of a theater, 17 Audrey Ave. Come gather, eat, drink, watch and discuss. To celebrate this vibrant history, The Oyster Bay Main Street Association is offering a new film series called “Oyster Flix” with an initial run of classic movies filmed in part on the north shore of LI. Movie snax’ will be available but bring your own beverages. Films (shown at 7:30 p.m.) will be immediately followed by a group discussion hosted by a speaker. $5 suggested donation /per person at the door. Call 922-6481. Recycled Sculpture Contest

Portledge School and the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center are co-sponsoring the Create Something GreatSM Recycled Sculpture Contest. This contest is a hands-on learning experience for budding young artists (Kindergarten through sixth grade) to pique their curiosity about art, wildlife and environmental issues. Students are encouraged to build sculptures designed around the theme of animals, birds and reptiles made out of recycled and/or reusable materials. The general public is invited to view all sculptures which will be on display. Award winners will be announced in three assigned age categories based on overall aesthetic value and creative use of recycled materials. All participants in attendance will be recognized and receive a certificate. 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at .m. to 3:30 p.m. at Portledge School, 355 Duck Pond Rd., Locust Valley. Following the awards reception, a professional from the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center will give a 45-minute presentation on Raptors: Birds of Prey, including live animals from the sanctuary. This event is free and open to the public. Award-winning sculptures will be transported to the sanctuary for a second art display April 11-16 from noon to 4 p.m.

•Alcoholics Anonymous closed step meeting Sundays at 8 p.m. and open meeting at the same time. On Wednesdays at 8 p.m. there is a beginner’s meeting and a closed discussion meeting. •Clutterers Anonymous, a 12-step self-help group, offers help and support to those who have clutter problems in their homes or workplace. Women who are planning a pregnancy or are already expecting can join Drs. Prince, Brooks and Flynn and have their questions answered on conception and a safe pregnancy.
