ART WALK

Art Walk begins at Chase Edwards Gallery (15 East Main Street; 802-0655; Atelier Gallery (9 East Main Street; 205-0907; and Art (that matters) (55 West Main Street; 917-769-9921;) having exhibitions featuring contemporary art from around the world, 7 P.M. to 9 P.M.  The Teaching Studios of Oyster Bay (115 Audrey Avenue; 971-597-2404); and The Artist Club (27 Berry Hill Road- 280-9682) will also be open. Art will also be available for viewing at various downtown merchants, including Canterbury Ales, Jack Halyards, and Wild Honey. North by Northwest

Oyster Bay Main Street Association (OBMSA) Oyster Flix presents be North by Northwest at 7:30 p.m. at the OBMSA office at 17 Audrey Avenue. Come early to get some popcorn—provided by Bob Liebert of Gooseberry Grove—and candy and a good seat; stay late to participate in a discussion moderated by film historian Irene Porco Eckert. There is a $5 suggested donation per person at the door. Call 922-6481.

Walk in the Woods

Co-sponsored by the Oyster Bay Preschool and the Life Enrichment Center at OB. 9 a.m. at The Life Enrichment Center at OB, 45 East Main St. Open to all. $20 per adult; $10 per child.

Recycled Sculpture Contest

Portledge School and the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center are co-sponsoring the Create Something GreatSM Recycled Sculpture Contest. This contest is a hands-on learning experience for budding young artists (Kindergarten through sixth grade) to pique their curiosity about art, wildlife and environmental issues. Students are encouraged to build sculptures designed around the theme of animals, birds and reptiles made out of recycled and/or reusable materials. The general public is invited to view all sculptures which will be on display. Award winners will be announced in three assigned age categories based on overall aesthetic value and creative use of recycled materials. All participants in attendance will be recognized and receive a certificate. 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at .m. to 3:30 p.m. at Portledge School, 355 Duck Pond Rd., Locust Valley. Following the awards reception, a professional from the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center will give a 45-minute presentation on Raptors: Birds of Prey, including live animals from the sanctuary. This event is free and open to the public. Award-winning sculptures will be transported to the sanctuary for a second art display April 11-16 from noon to 4 p.m.

Help Japan with Love

Charity Concert hosted by the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, LI Branch with special Guest Xiao-Feng Wu, an extraordinary talented pianist, to perform the music of Chopin. As a NY-based pianist, Xiaofeng has been claimed as “simply prodigious, to be on the roster of the first-class performers of his immense country – China” by ABC.es, a European music review magazine. As one of only five pianists and the only Chinese selected by Apple, Inc. to be part of its Chopin Project, Xiao-feng has recorded Chopin solo works for exclusive distribution via iTunes. His solo concerts have been highly acclaimed by music critics in numerous publications and media outlets around the world. Xiaofeng has chosen to play some of Chopin’s works in this performance because they echo the strong feelings of those who have suffered in the great earthquake in Japan in March and those who have responded with love and compassion. All lovers of Chopin music are welcome to come and listen in person to a top pianist playing Chopin’s works and understand the true spirit of Tzu Chi – “Compassion and Relief.” The concert will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Tzu Chi LI Branch, 60 East Williston Ave., East Williston. Closed-Captioned Screening of Secretariat

The LI Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf presents a closed-captioned screening of the celebrated film Secretariat at 10 a.m. on at the Elwood Cinemas, 1950 Jericho Tpke., Elwood. The Mill Neck Interpreter Service-sponsored screening, with an admission fee of $10 per person, includes unlimited free popcorn, beverage and entry into a one-of-a-kind door prize. The Knitanistas

The main purpose of the group is to create projects for CaretoKnit who then distributes them to the needy. However, you are free to bring personal projects to work on too, so expertise can be shared. It will be a relaxed atmosphere allowing for the free exchange of ideas, experiences, thoughts and fun. If you don’t have supplies they will be provided for you. Egg-stravaganza!

At the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center, 134 Cove Rd. The Birds are acting odd this year…Our feathered friends are laying eggs in all the wrong places. We need your help to collect these strange eggs – as the saying goes “Finders, Keepers” you take home whatever is inside. Come build and decorate a basket, have a close encounter with your favorite egg-laying animals, and hunt for eggs along our trails. Concert

Ridotto, concerts “with a Touch of Theatre”, presents “Woman in Love.” It is a program featuring the short, one-act, one-woman opera La Voix Humaine by Francis Poulenc with a libretto by Jean Cocteau. Soprano Deborah Lifton stars in the opera with Brian DeMaris, piano. The program also features several narrated short stories and music by Maurice Ravel. Band Together for Ally

Last September, 24-year-old Allyson was diagnosed with a rare Small Cell Cervical Cancer. There is no specific protocol for treatment and currently Ally has started her second bout of treatment in NYC. This fundraiser is to help Ally and her family defray the mounting costs of treatment. Come out enjoy great music, food, raffles and support Ally and her family while she fights this war. Ally”s parents and band members from Hicksville. 6 p.m. at the The Homestead, 107 South St., Oyster Bay. $20 donation at the door. Garage Sale

On April 30, Christ Church will be hosting a community garage sale, where spaces can be rented by members of the community for $25. Tables will also be available for rental at $5/each. For an application, call the church at 922-6377. Rain or shine (parking lot or in Parish Hall). Do some spring cleaning for profit.


 Weekly Events

•Alcoholics Anonymous closed step meeting Sundays at 8 p.m. and open meeting at the same time. On Wednesdays at 8 p.m. there is a beginner’s meeting and a closed discussion meeting. Any one can attend the open meetings. The closed meetings are for anyone who has a desire to stop drinking. The meetings are held at Christ Church, 61 E. Main St. For information call 922-6377.

•Alanon meeting will be held every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Oyster Bay Presbyterian Church, East Main St. All are welcome.

•Substance Abuse Groups meet at the Youth and Family Counseling Agency, 193 A, South St., on Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. and from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Registration required. Call 922-6867.

•Open Mike at Canterbury’s. Every Thursday enjoy the open mike night at Canterbury’s. Professional musicians and novices are invited to bring their instruments, voices, and friends to join him on stage or perform by themselves. Approximate starting time is 8:45 p.m. Call Mark 922-3214.
