Closed-Captioned Screening of Secretariat
The LI Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf presents a closed-captioned screening of the celebrated film Secretariat at 10 a.m. on at the Elwood Cinemas, 1950 Jericho Tpke., Elwood. The Mill Neck Interpreter Service-sponsored screening, with an admission fee of $10 per person, includes unlimited free popcorn, beverage and entry into a one-of-a-kind door prize. The Knitanistas
The main purpose of the group is to create projects for CaretoKnit who then distributes them to the needy. However, you are free to bring personal projects to work on too, so expertise can be shared. It will be a relaxed atmosphere allowing for the free exchange of ideas, experiences, thoughts and fun. If you don’t have supplies they will be provided for you. At the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center, 134 Cove Rd. The Birds are acting odd this year…Our feathered friends are laying eggs in all the wrong places. We need your help to collect these strange eggs – as the saying goes “Finders, Keepers” you take home whatever is inside. Come build and decorate a basket, have a close encounter with your favorite egg-laying animals, and hunt for eggs along our trails. Concert
Ridotto, concerts “with a Touch of Theatre”, presents “Woman in Love.” It is a program featuring the short, one-act, one-woman opera La Voix Humaine by Francis Poulenc with a libretto by Jean Cocteau. Soprano Deborah Lifton stars in the opera with Brian DeMaris, piano. The program also features several narrated short stories and music by Maurice Ravel. Signs of Spring Hike
At Muttontown Preserve, Muttontown Ln., south of 25A, East Norwich. The program provides participants with the opportunity to explore the emerging colors and life of the new season as the guide leads the group along the preserve’s woodland trails and fields. Participants can view spice bush, snowdrops and cypress spurge and learn about a variety of aromatic plants. Enrollment for the hike ($5) is limited and preregistration is required by calling 571-8500 weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The hike will begin at the Bill Paterson Nature Center on the preserve.

Band Together for Ally
Last September, 24-year-old Allyson was diagnosed with a rare Small Cell Cervical Cancer. There is no specific protocol for treatment and currently Ally has started her second bout of treatment in NYC. This fundraiser is to help Ally and her family defray the mounting costs of treatment. Come out enjoy great music, food, raffles and support Ally and her family while she fights this war. Spring 2011 Business Initiative
The Town of Oyster Bay, in conjunction with the Nassau Community College business faculty, will be conducting a series of free informative seminars to help local business owners as they navigate through challenging economic times. Professor Jack Mandel of NCC’s Department of Marketing Retailing/Fashion/Interior Design, is the program coordinator. National Park Week
National Park Week April 16-24 is being celebrated at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site with an exhibition of student work from the Rhode Island School of Design showcasing more than 25 original works of art at the Old Orchard Museum. The objects range from small hand-crafted books to large-scale furniture pieces, all utilizing plant material from Sagamore Hill NHS and George Washington Birthplace National Historic Site. The exhibition is the result of a partnership between the Rhode Island School of Design, the Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation and Sagamore Hill National Historic Site. In addition to the house tours and the Theodore Roosevelt Museum at Old Orchard, the park will be offering a number of special programs during National Park Week for families, including talks, walks and Junior Ranger activities. Fee free week. Other activities include:
•April 16, 17, 23, 24: Join a Park Ranger who will provide a new presentation on the working and riding horses of Sagamore Hill at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
•April 16, 17, 23, 24. Join one of the Rangers for a guided hike that captures the spirit of the Point-to-Point walks that Theodore Roosevelt created for his children and guests at noon and 2 p.m.
•April 18: Sagamore Hill NHS will host a Naturalization Ceremony for 50 future citizens of the United States on the front porch of Theodore Roosevelt’s home on at 10 a.m. The Honorable Joanna Seybert will preside over the ceremony and administer the Oath of Allegiance. The ceremony will also include a special appearance by President Theodore Roosevelt as portrayed by James Foote.
•April 23: A cleanup of our beach on Cold Spring Harbor will begin at 10 a.m. Meet at the Visitor Center at 9:30 a.m. to register, and wear appropriate shoes and old clothes. Following the cleanup, return to the Visitor Center for snacks and refreshments. Volunteers who participate in the activity will receive a certificate signed by superintendent of Sagamore Hill NHS. No reservations are required.
•April 23: Amazing mysteries of plankton will be revealed from 1 to 3 p.m. by the Oyster Bay WaterFront Center. Children and adults learn about methods for collecting plankton.
Weekly Events
•Alcoholics Anonymous closed step meeting Sundays at 8 p.m. and open meeting at the same time. On Wednesdays at 8 p.m. there is a beginner’s meeting and a closed discussion meeting. Any one can attend the open meetings. The closed meetings are for anyone who has a desire to stop drinking. The meetings are held at Christ Church, 61 E. Main St. For information call 922-6377.
