Origami-athon for Japan’s Disaster Relief
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church members and their friends in the community are holding a Cranes of Compassion Origami-athon from 3 to 7 p.m. in the school gymnasium, 99 Central Park Rd. Many of Good Shepherd’s Japanese families will help coordinate the event. There will be coaches to help everyone who would like to create a crane. Visitors will be able to view artwork and listen to music and enjoy Japanese cuisine. There will also be delicious Japanese food items for sale with all the proceeds going directly to Japan for disaster relief. Call 349-1966. The Origami-athon will also be held on April 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Yom HaShoah

Spin for the Cure
An indoor team relay ride. A team captain registers the team, recruits the team members and then together they raise funds for the fight against breast cancer with the proceeds benefiting Komen Greater NYC. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ellen’s Fitness Studio, 490 Old Bethpage Rd.. Plainview.
The Lemon Tree Film
The Lemon Tree (2008), a NY Times “Critic’s Pick.” will be shown at Temple Beth Elohim, 926 Round Swamp Rd., Old Bethpage, at 2:30 p.m. Running time: 1 hour 46 minutes. This film is not rated. Yom Hashoah Program
The keynote speaker will be Evelyn Pike Rubin, author of Ghetto Shanghai, popular lecturer and Jewish activist. Mrs. Rubin, a holocaust survivor, will share her story and the story of survival of approximately 18,0000 Jewish refugees from the Nazi terror, who found sanctuary in Japanese occupied Shanghai, China during WWII. After experiencing Kristallnacht and the incarceration of her father in the Buchenwald Concentration Camp, Evelyn and her family boarded the Hakozaki Maru, in Naples, Italy, for the long voyage to Shanghai. Once there she and the other Jewish refugees were forced to overcome tremendous odds in order to survive the horrendous conditions of life in the ghetto created by the Japanese Imperial authorities. This seldom told story is an important chapter of the Shoah not to be forgotten. The program will also include lighting of memorial candles by our own honored survivors of the Shoah, selected readings by our Hebrew School Students as well as the moving reading of the names of those martyrs lost in the Shoah from the Book of Remembrance. 7 p.m. at the Plainview Jewish Center, 95 Floral Dr. Call 938-8610.

Protect Assets in the Event of Long Term Illness
An informative seminar presented by Margaret Carrozza, Esq. What you need to know about the recent estate tax changes, the programs will also focus on how to manage a loved one’s assets when he/she is no longer capable, how to protect one’s home and other assets when a loved one needs long term care, estate planning – what happens when the “well” spouse dies first and other estate and tax planning issues. Plainview-Old Bethpage SEPTA meeting. The topic will be “Children With Special Needs – The Stigma of Being Different.” The group will address the stigma associated with learning, mental health, developmental and medical issues and how it impacts the child, siblings and the family. This workshop will be presented by Susan Cohen, Ph.D., coordinator of Psychological Services at North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center and Elissa Smilowitz, LCSW, coordinator at the BOCES Intensive Support Program. The public is invited.

America’s Poets Walk With Walt
The program, which will be held at the birthplace of America’s Good Gray Poet at 246 Old Walt Whitman Rd., Huntington Station, will be hosted by Whitman Birthplace Writer in Residence George Wallace. The program will pair a nationally prominent visiting writer with one of Long Island’s fine regional poets for a program of poetry and conversation.
