Long Island’s Gershow Recycling has announced it will be featured in an episode of National Geographic Television’s new show Break It Down: New York Scrap Yard.

“We are so pleased that National Geographic, known throughout the world as a leader in quality and educational programming, devoted so much time and resources to learn about our business and its importance to the economy.  This program is an eye-opener to anyone interested in learning about the scrap metal industry and recycling in general,” said Kevin Gershowitz, President, Gershow Recycling.

During the summer of 2010, National Geographic spent several hundred hours at Gershow to produce the hour-long program featuring Gershow’s Medford location.

According to National Geographic Television, the episode takes viewers into Gershow Recycling — a sprawling 40-acre scrap yard in Long Island. In just one day, this family-run business will crush three million pounds of scrap — including as many as 500 cars and 20 city buses — to create a multimillion-dollar mound of steel. This family of scrap connoisseurs has only 10 hours to get the job done.

The episode is scheduled to air on May 5 at 10 p.m. The episode will re-air on May 6 at 1 a.m. and on May 12 at 6 p.m. It can be seen on Channel 162 (Cablevision), Channel 121 (FiOS), Channel 621 (FiOS HD), Channel 276 (DirecTV), Channel 65 (Time Warner Cable) and Channel 765 (Time Warner Cable HD).

Gershow Recycling has seven locations in the Long Island and metropolitan New York area: Brooklyn, New Hyde Park, Freeport, Lindenhurst, Huntington Station, Bay Shore and Medford.

Started in 1964 by Sam Gershowitz, Gershow Recycling began as a two man operation with a tractor and trailer, a boom truck and the first portable car flattener. Now with the second generation carrying on the legacy, Gershow generates over 750 jobs, contributing millions of dollars to the local economy, while helping to preserve Long Island’s environment. Gershow Recycling takes aluminum, brass, copper, steel, cast iron, appliances, cars and vehicles. In keeping with its philosophy of “Conserving the Future by Recycling the Past,” Gershow Recycling purchases scrap metal that would have otherwise wound up in local landfills, and turns them into high-quality scrap products for recycling. The company produces both ferrous and non-ferrous products.
