Osama Bin Laden Dead: New York Daily News Says Rot in Hell

OSAMA BIN LADEN DEAD NYDNThe newspaper headlines ranged from “Dead” to “US Kills Bin Laden” in New York Monday morning, after news of Osama bin Laden’s death was announced late Sunday night.

But one of the most talked about headlines of the day comes from the front page of the New York Daily News, which simply said “Rot in Hell.”

While some feel it is too much, others feel the cover sums up their thoughts perfectly. Near Ground Zero in lower Manhattan, small posters are taped to the sides of buildings with the Statue of Liberty holding bin Laden’s Photo-shopped bloody head instead of a torch.

Bin Laden’s death comes nearly one decade after the September 11 attacks.

He was killed by United States troops in a fire fight, President Barack Obama confirmed in a public address Sunday night.

“Good evening. Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda, and a terrorist who’s responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women, and children,” announced Obama, declaring that the 9/11 mastermind was dead.

Obama said he was briefed in August of 2010 on a possible lead on bin Laden’s location and, after eight months of planning, last week determined bin Laden was in fact hiding in a compound  in Pakistan.

No Americans were harmed in the capture, Obama said, and bin Laden’s body is currently in United States custody.

“Today’s achievement is a testament to the greatness of our country,” said Obama. “…Justice has been done.”

What do you think of the New York Daily News cover: too much, too little–or just right?

In other news, people are now calling on the government to release proof in the form of photos that bin Laden, who has already been buried at sea, is indeed dead.

An image that allegedly shows the dead body bin Laden has already hit the Internet, but many believe it is a hoax.

Alleged Osama bin Laden Photo (WARNING: VERY GRAPHIC)

Neither U.S. nor Pakistani officials have confirmed the photo, and many media outlets have concluded that it is an altered photo of bin Laden from 2008.

U.S. officials say bin Laden’s identity has been confirmed through DNA, which offered a near 100 percent certainty that it was bin Laden who was killed. The CIA also identified the terrorist through “facial recognition,” which uses technology to match up unique facial characteristics, and by a woman believed to be his wife on site.

Officials said that the al-Qaida leader was shot in the head and killed toward the end of the firefight. Three other men were also killed, one believed to be his son. No Americans were injured during the raid.

The body had been photographed before it was put aboard the USS Carl Vinson and buried at sea. Officials said that traditional Islamic procedures for handing the remains were followed, including the washing of the corpse and placing it in a white sheet.

The actual autopsy photo is described as extremely graphic, and there is no word on whether the image will be released to the public.
