It was another great outing for the mighty Giants who once again displayed strong pitching, timely hitting and patience at the plate to earn their third victory of the season against an impressive Rays team at the Merillon Complex this evening. Starter Max Silverstein earned his third win of the season with a 5 strikeout performance over 3 innings and also contributed offensively with a single, a 3-run home run, 3 stolen bases and 2 runs scored. John Napolitano turned in 2 solid innings of relief with 6 strikeouts of his own while adding to the bottom line with a single, a stolen base and 2 runs scored. Also contributing offensively was Gregory Andreopoulos and Patrick McTiernan who combined for 5 walks, 5 stolen bases, an RBI and 3 runs scored while Christopher Valentine and Scott Schanter each drove in timely runs on sharply hit balls in the infield. Alex Garabedian and Matthew Notine added to the bottom line with an RBI and run scored, respectively while Jesse Romano flashed the leather in the field. A special thanks to call-up CJ Riccobono who not only stole a base and scored a run, but patrolled the outfield with authority.

Hillside Beverage Ducks
Another nail-biter for the fans as their Bears battled to a win in a close game. The men in blue eked one out with only four hits, two coming late in the game. Base running, fielding and pitching made all the difference in this baby. The Bears bats were uncharacteristically quiet, but the conversion of four hits to four runs turned out to be enough. Christian Carrick had a single to lead off the first and came around to score. In the fifth, tied 2-2, upper deck seats starting to empty, Yanni Rigos started a comeback rally with a big double. Corey Rutkin protected the plate, waited for his pitch and earned MVP with a single that sent the winning run home. The fans rallied, the stands rocked and Jason Seidman brought Corey home with a huge shot to right field. The Bear’s hurlers only walked one batter in today’s match-up. Starter Carrick and closer Rigos each threw great innings. Carrick had 5 strikeouts and allowed only 4 hits. He announced early that the team had come to play as the first three batters were retired in order. Rigos got the win with 4 strikeouts and only two hits against. He showed nerves of steel coming into the sixth inning. The first batter nailed a sharply hit grounder to right field, but his support team was in place. Anthony Verde fielded and launched it to first baseman Rutkin and the out was made. Rigos then took a deep breath and struck out the rest of the side. There were several great plays made by the golden gloves of the infield. Carrick snagged a foul pop in the second. Also in the second a man was thrown out stealing on the combined efforts of catcher Rutkin and shortstop Anthony Lanzilotta. Anthony Pitre, playing second, made a tag that prevented the go-ahead run. Brenda Nolty, Max Cohn, Rich Lufrano and Matthew Vowinkle were all solid in the outfield.

Dominick’s Italian/American Deli Mariners (2)
In what proved to be the most exciting game of the season to date, it was another great win for the mighty Giants who once again displayed solid pitching and stellar defense to earn their fourth victory of the season against a very tough Mariners team at the Merillon Complex this evening. Starter Max Silverstein turned in another solid effort giving up only 2 runs over 3 innings with 2 strikeoutswhile also contributing offensively with 2 singles, 2 stolen bases, an RBI and a run scored. John Napolitano took the hill in relief in the bottom of the 4th inning and gave up only one run over 3 innings while throwing 3 strikeouts to earn his first victory of the season. The offensive star for the Giants was Jesse Romano with a single, a double, an RBI and a run scored while Fernando Robayo and Gregory Andreopoulos each hit a double with Fernando’s driving in what proved to be the winning run in the top of the 6th inning. Alex Garabedian came around to score the first run of the game for the Giants after being hit by a pitch in the top of the 3rd inning. Patrick McTiernan was once again solid behind the plate at catcher and displayed a keen awareness of the position by nailing a runner attempting to score with a great tag in bottom of 5th inning on a throw from the centerfielder to the pitcher to home after an errant pick-off attempt at 2nd base went into the outfield. This tremendous play maintained a one run lead held by the opposition at the time. Scott Schanter also contributed defensively by cleanly fielding a hard hit ground ball to second base to end the game with the tying run in scoring position. Harman Takhar, Matthew Notine, Brian Korpacz and Christopher Valentine each flashed the leather in the field. Go Giants!

This reporter sits emotionally drained after a seven inning Tuesday evening roller coaster at Merillon. Our Bears went to the wire with their arch-nemesis the Cyclones and it was a slugfest. They lost today, 12-11 in overtime, but this was terrific baseball. There were breathtaking plays and hits, horrendous errors, a seesawing scoreboard, wild pitches, dirty uniforms, and two out rallies. The game went to extra innings and ended in almost total darkness. It was rumored that the winning run came in on a walk but we cannot confirm as we could not see. The first three and a half innings the Bears looked unstoppable. As the men took the field in the bottom of the fourth they were up 6-0. Pitcher Yanni Rigos had all his stuff. In three innings of work the big guy allowed only one hit, one walk and had 3 strikeouts. Great plays in the infield were key, Rich Lufrano at third base and Anthony Pitre at short stop both made put outs that got the crowd cheering. Offensively, minds and bats were working. Anthony Pitre had a walk and a double, Matthew Vowinkle two singles and a double, Yanni Rigos a double and Jason Seidman two doubles (!) and the game was only half over. In the bottom of the fourth it was as though a different team took the field. Lead off walks, a series of errors and some good Cyclone at bats cut the lead to 3. In the fifth things became even grimmer. The Bears were unproductive at the plate and were retired in order. Then it looked like perhaps the boys had shaken off the willies as a sharply hit grounder to Yanni at third was even more sharply thrown to Corey Rutkin at first for the out. But it was not to be. We’ll leave out the gore but by the time Jason caught a runner stealing to end the inning the Bears trailed 7-6.
At the top of the sixth the first two bear’s batter struck out and it seemed to be all over. But then a walk was followed by a single from Anthony Lanziotta and it was clear that these warriors weren’t going quietly. Pitre got up and nailed a single! Vowinkle 2 for 2 with two doubles batting next, blasted a triple and sent all three runners home! Then Vowinkle stole home and the Bears were back 10-7. Unfortunately the Cyclones hadn’t gotten the ‘quit’ sign and they scored 3 in the bottom half so at the end of 6 the score was 10-10 and the game was not over. At the top of the seventh, clean up man Rutkin 0 for 2 with a sac fly came to the plate like a man on a mission. He gutted out a triple and then stole home putting the Bears back up 11-10. It seemed like come back that had to stick. But it was not to be. The Cyclones were up and in the waning spring evening light they grabbed the game back and that was all there was. Hats off to both teams. The players showed how much they love to play, neither team ever gave up or ever gave in.

vs. Eddie’s Pizza Marlins
At Dietz Dairy Field on a beautiful night for baseball, Matt Rivera started and struck out three in his inning of work. He also singled stole a base scored a run drove in a run and made a great play at first base to kill a rally by the Eddie’s Pizza Marlins. Jared Puntus also pitched a scoreless inning striking out three batters. Virag Shah struck out three in his inning of work and walked, was hit by a pitch scored a run and stole a base. Frankie Stigliano made his pitching debut and went to a full count to the first batter before walking him. He also walked scored a run and made a nice catch on a steal attempt at third base. Siva Paturi had two hits and scored a run and stole 2 bases. Justin Tamara continued his excellent defense at catcher, made some excellent throws on steal attempts and singled, scored a run and rove in a run. Adrian Balkcom came in in the 4th inning with the bases loaded and no outs and struck out two and got the final out on a come backer to the mound, He also made a game saving catch in left filed and had two hits and drove in two runs. Danny McClellan made some excellent catches at first base and walked and had an rbi single. Ibrihim Khwaja was on base twice via walk and hit by pitch and made a nice play backing up a throws in the outfield. Aaron Lesser made a excellent catch at third of a throw on a steal and was on base twice and scored a run. Sam Motelson came in to close out the game getting the final three outs and walked and scored a run. Another excellent game by all players.

May 6th – The official middle of the season game was a great one between the Dodgers and Athletics. The Athletics were a great hitting and fielding team and had a fantastic game. The Dodgers held their own with some great hitting. Nicholas Rubinic went 4-4 with 2 doubles. Stephen Bracco, Justin Rosen and Nicholas Ungania were also 4-4. These four players combined for 8 runs and 8 RBI’s. Matt Rubinic was a perfect 3-3. Our Dodgers came on strong in the last inning to score 6 runs. Nice game Dodgers.

Newman Orthodontics Braves
It was a beautiful night for baseball in NHP. Leading the offense for the Braves was Ryan Wasserman & Matthew Heimowitz with 4 hits each. Matthew H also had a big double. 3 hits each by Edward Mauceri, Stephen Lopez, Alex Schwartz, Matthew Bloom, Kenny Hirschfeld, Duhan Lee, Eli Goodwin & Jaden Weisser. Jimmy Weedon & Ben Goodwin had 2 hits each. Joseph Vieni contributed with 1 hit. Leading the defensive for the Braves was Jaden, Ryan & Jimmy. Jaden and Ryan combined for a great play in the infield, Jaden fielded a grounder at short and fired a one hop throw that Ryan scooped out of the dirt to the amaze of the great fans. A great all around team effort and both teams showed excellent sportsmanship.

Gigi’s Pizza Angels
The first meeting between the Angels and Diamondbacks was a thriller. Nickolas Levkulic pitched 2 innings and helped keep the game tied at one after 2. Mathew Merolla also pitched well striking out 2 and shut out the Angels over 1 inning. Mathew Strocchia entered the game after coming off a strong outing, and gave up only one run. Cenzo Montoni with the Diamondbacks up 2 in the 5th, pitched a shutout inning to keep the lead. After a late arrival, the Diamondbacks were happy to have Chris Bruccoleri earn his first save of the year. The pitchers were of course helped by run support. Daniel Goldberg belted two doubles and had 3 RBIS. Daniel Son continues to shine at the plate and added a RBI. Daniel Mattei added his second hit and first RBI of the season. Brendan Slattery added to the runs with hit in the fifth. Mathew Castelli continues to prove he is a leadoff hitter by getting on base to start a rally in the fifth. Lastly, Abidin Dauti sealed the game with a bases clearing double.

At some point in the season, run support would help. The Diamondback offense for a second straight game stepped up to the plate. Daniel Son, Daniel Mattei, Mathew Strocchia, Anthony Devito, Abidin Dauti, Daniel Goldberg, Cenzo Montoni and Mathew Merolla, each had one RBI. Mathew Castelli continues to produce in the leadoff spot and increased his on base percentage. The pitching remainssolid, and clearly they are strong in that position. Christopher Bruccoleri, Cenzo Montoni, Mathew Merolla, Mathew Strocchia continue to come up ACES. AJ Devito made his debut today, and pitched out of a jam and recored his firstsave of the year. The manager feels very confident that he will be able to add to the pitching rotation with new arms in the near future.

The Rangers and Philliees played a tight game down at the ball field tonight. The Rangers were lead on offense by Spencer Kern who had 2 hits and 4steals, Brett Figleman who had 2 hits and 3 Rbi’s, Stephen DeRocchis reached base 3 times and stole 4 bases and scored 2 big runs in the game, CJ Riccobono hit a laser past the second basemen and added a big RBI late in the game, Peter Carreca hit a hard line drive past first base to drive in a run. Philip Schurr was able to get a a big base hit late in the game and steal 2 bases to add which added an insurance run. The pitching was led by Peter Carreca who had 6k’s, Justin Yang with 4 k’s and Phil Schurr with 2k’s. The defense was led by Dillon Hod who saved a home run with a nice catch in right field. CJ Riccobono was his steady self at Shortstop with some run savings plays. David Klebanow, Marco Collucio and Ryan Gaudino assist on defense with some nice plays.

The Rangers had their hitting shoes on for this game. The Offense was led by Brett Figleman who hit a grand slam and went 4 for 4 with 7 RBIs, Jared Murad got his first base hit and RBI of the season. CJ Riccobono had 2 hits, 2 walks and 4 RBIs, Dillon Hod had 2 hits, 2 RBIs and 5 steals, Philip Shcurr knocked the ball hard all day with a long triple and double and added 3 RBIs, Peter Carreca walked 3 times, hit a triple and knocked in 3 Runs and added 4 steals, Spencer Kern had 2 hits, 4 steals and 2 Rbi’s, David Klebanow hit a rocked to left field and added 3 RBIs, Stephen DeRocchis walked 4 times and added 2 Rbi’s, Justin Yang reached base 4 times, stole 3 bases and added 2 RBIs. Marco Coluccio had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. The defense was led by David Klebanow who made an outstanding play in rightfield to throw out a runner, Marco Coluccio was solid behind the plate. The pitching was led by Spencer Kern who had 4 k’s, Philip Schurr, Brett Figleman and David Klebanow. The Ranger’s enjoyed playing this game and hitting the ball hard all day long.

City Line Florist Tigers
The Applebees Dodgers instructional team had a wonderful game on a sunny Saturday morning. Dodgers Ryan Lau, Aedan Cotter and Sanay Shah hit the baseball off of the tee like champs. Additionally, Lance Yetikyel, Justin Halzlewood, and Zachary Stoyer ran the bases quickly every time. On the infield, Aidan Smith picked up some very difficult ground balls and teamates Robert Teets, Aidan Multani, and Christopher Erxleben helped to grab the ball and get the batters out at first base. Connor Gould hit the ball well and had a few key catches in the field. All in all, the Dodgers enjoyed this first sunny and warm day on the diamond and were able to show how much they’ve been learning each week. They had alot of fun playing the Tigers and look forward to next week.

New Hyde Park Funeral Home Blue Jays (12)
The Rays dropped a tough game 12-8 on a glorious Mother’s Day to the blasting Blue Jays. The Rays jumped out to an early 7-1 lead, thanks in part to some hitting heroics from Brian Volk and Sean McClellan. Despite excellent efforts on defense by Matthew Solomon, Joe Sullivan, Jake Dieber, Tyler Dauble, Angelo Ferrigno and Evan Chaleff, the Blue Jays stormed back to take the lead. Strong pitching by Charlie Goodwin, Jack Tucker, Sean O’Connor and Brian Volk kept the Rays in the game until the Rays’ final rally was snuffed out with the tying run at the plate.

Hand Rolled Bagels Reds (2)
The mighty Mariners snapped a two-game losing streak with an explosive win over the Reds. Jimmy Denara joined the home run club to get the offense going in the first. Andrew Colgan was 3 for 4 and made a nice catch on a deep fly ball to left. Dominick Picirillo was a home run shy of the cycle and also pitched a flawless third inning. James Castaldi and Mike Zuschlag both belted deep doubles, Thomas Mangin smacked a single and Harrison Nettler and Shawn Chacko reached base safely twice. The big hit of the day was provided by Brandon Knupfer who laced a single to right to bring in a run with the game still tight. Nick Lopez made his pitching debut and helped his cause with some nifty glove work off the mound. John Denara also pitched a scoreless inning, aided by Parth Patel who showed off his strong arm at third after snagging a hot-shot down the line and firing a bullet to first to get the hitter by half a step. Although the Mariners’ bats seemed to steal the show today, interviewed after the game, Coach Greg was most impressed by his team’s errorless defense.

May 7: The City Line Florist Tigers continued to play sound, fundamental baseball during a scoreless, two inning game with the Applebee’s Dodgers. Major contributions were turned in by all. Bob Symanski, Mitchell Agris, Ethan Jhong, and Ethan Vo stopped every ball that came their way. Jake Gruosso, Ryan Zhang, and MichaelManfredi were hitting lasers off the tee. Ethan Goldberg, Stephen Coffey, Peter Duigan, and Michael O’Grady were fleet-footed menaces on the basepaths. The way these cats show improvement every week, an undefeated season is inevitable!

The Rangers and Diamondbacks played an exciting game tonight. The Rangers were lead on offense by Peter Carreca with 3 hits and 3 RBIs and 2 steals, CJ Riccobono with 2 hits and 3 RBIs and 3 steals, Justin Yang reached base 3 times and added 2 steals, Jared Murad took one for the team and added a steal to score a big run int he game. David Klebanow had a hard base hit down the line. Spencer Kern added a base hit and stolen base. The pitching was lead by Philip Schurr who pitched two scoreless innings with 3k’s. Justin Yang was solid on the mound with 3 k’s. Peter Carreca pitched two solid innings with 6k’s. Stepehen DeRocchis was solid in the field today. Brett Figelman was outstanding behind the plate. Ryan Gaudino and Dillon Hod played a solid defense as well. CJ Riccobono made some outstanding plays at shortstop to save a few runs.

Paul Depaulis led the Marlins offense by getting on base 3 times and had 2 stolen bases. Ian Tsao and William Regan had an RBI each. Philip Menist added to the offense with a single and was robbed of a hit in the 5th by a great catch by the centerfielder. The play of the game came when Ian Tsao threw out a runner from left field in the 3rd inning and Vincent Gambino placed the tag on therunner.The Marlin’s pitching was solid once again with Jake Blancher and Eric Madenberg making it look easy for 2 innings each.Andrew Apaza also made a nice play play in the outfield saving a run. Brian Kornreich showed patience at the plate with 2 walks and also stole a base. Spencer Horowitz continued his hot hitting with another xtra base hit-a double to left in the 4th. Hans Dewitte stole another base and was solid behind the plate.

The offense was led by Eric Madenberg by getting on base all 3 times he was up. 2 walks and a hard single to left. Spenser Horowitz had an RBI single in the 1st as did Jake Blancher. Ian Tsao added to the Marlin’s offense with a single and a stolen base.Hans Dewitte was robbed twice in the game. Once by the 1st baseman and again by a diving grab by the shortstop. Pitching by the Marlins was once again solid. William Regan, Philip Menist and Eric Madenberg mowed em down. Andrew Apaza showed his quickness on the base paths by swiping 2 bases.

Mariners (14)
It was a tough loss today against one of the more dominant teams in the league, Domenick’s Italian & American Delicatessen Mariners, however, the Hand Rolled Bagels Reds never quit despite losing 14-2. MVP of the game was clearly Anthony DePompeis who pitched three solid innings, giving up just 3 runs, and striking out five players. In addition, Anthony hit the first home run of the season, a hard hit ball to deep left field. Bats were alsohumming for Greg Capelle who was robbed of a extra base hit with a drive to center, while Eric Del Valle tore it up at the plate with a hard single up the middle. We worked hard on the field, as Mike Rose made a solid play at second to get the advancing runner, while Elliot “Johnny Bench” Weissman was brilliant behind the plate as catcher. Dylan Kareff made some aggressive cuts at bat, as did Mike Mallone, Raymond Gresalfi, Darren Song and Matthew Baronci.

Siva Paturi went 2 for 3 with 2 rbis, a run scored and two singles. Virag Shah also went 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs and two singles. Danny McCellan went 1 for 3 with a single an RBI and scored a run. Justin Tamara went 1 for 1 with two walks three stolen bases and an RBI. William Lentini walked twice scored two runs and pitched an inning recording three outs. Adrian Balkcom made a fantastic play at third stabbing a line drive and throwing the runner out at first. Matt Rivera went 2 for 2 with a walk two singles 2 runs scored and three stolen bases. Jared Puntus walked had a run scoring ground out and pitched the fifth inning.
