Oyster Flix

Anybody remember the old Lyric Movie Theater on Audrey Ave.? It’s been about 30 years since downtown Oyster Bay had a movie theater, but starting in February there will be a modified version of a theater, 17 Audrey Ave. Come gather, eat, drink, watch and discuss. To celebrate this vibrant history, The Oyster Bay Main Street Association is offering a new film series called “Oyster Flix” with an initial run of classic movies filmed in part on the north shore of LI. Movie snax’ will be available but bring your own beverages. Films (shown at 7:30 p.m.) will be immediately followed by a group discussion hosted by a speaker. $5 suggested donation /per person at the door. Spring 2011 Business Initiative

The Town of Oyster Bay, in conjunction with the Nassau Community College business faculty, will be conducting a series of free informative seminars to help local business owners as they navigate through challenging economic times. Professor Jack Mandel of NCC’s Department of Marketing Retailing/Fashion/Interior Design, is the program coordinator. All of the seminars will take place in the Hearing Room of Oyster Bay Town Hall East, 54 Audrey Ave., Oyster Bay. To register or for more information call 624-7890. May 13: From 9 to 10:30 a.m., Professor Dawn DiStefano, of the Department of Marketing/Retailing/Fashion Interior Design, will talk about building your business with E-Commerce. From 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Professor Caroline Falconetti, CPA of the Department of Accounting/ Business Administration, will discuss making smart choices when it comes to cash.

The Knitanistas

The meetings are held in the Oyster Bay Library at 1p.m. The main purpose of the group is to create projects for CaretoKnit who then distributes them to the needy. However, you are free to bring personal projects to work on too, so expertise can be shared. It will be a relaxed atmosphere allowing for the free exchange of ideas, experiences, thoughts and fun. Spring Fair and Estate Sale

Race for Literacy

Brooke Jackman Foundation’s annual Race for Literacy fundraiser will be held at the Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School beginning at 10:15 a.m. Come for this fun 5K run/walk that will help us donate books, create literacy programs and build libraries all over the greater New York area. Dozens of prizes will be awarded to winners in all age categories, and each participant will receive a T-shirt and water bottle commemorating the event. Child under 10? No problem. Again this year, the free 1/4 mile Fun Run for future Olympians will begin with arts and crafts at 9:15 a.m. and the Fun Run starting at 9:45 with prizes for all awarded at the end.

Walk in the Woods

Chelsea Mansion Renaissance Faire

Featuring martial arts and sword demonstrations, fashion show depicting styles of the Tudor through Cavalier eras, demonstrations of period crafts, children’s games, archery, and a unique marketplace. Also on May 15.

Health Fair

Annual Oyster Bay Health Fair sponsored by NY State Senator Carl Marcellino and OB-EN Chamber of Commerce from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Audrey Ave.  Visit over 100 exhibitors as they demonstrate their specialties. Whether it’s live entertainment, fitness demonstrations, health screenings, interactive children’s displays, sports, nutritious refreshments or just fun come and kickoff a Healthy & Fit Summer. Concerts at Christ Church

Presents The World in Song, Sarah Adams Hoover (soprano) and Arielle Levioff (pianist), music from around the world. 4 p.m. at Christ Church, 61 E. Main St.

Concert

Come and enjoy an afternoon of wonderful music at the Community United Methodist Church, 1300 Jericho-Oyster Bay Rd., East Norwich, at 5:30 p.m. The concert will feature The Milal Choir, a worldwide known 40-member choir who sing, play instruments and perform its famous Bell Choir. Bailey Nature Adventures

Family Day + Amazing Amphibians. Bailey’s great spring event: tree climbing, music, food, animals, face painting, fairy houses and a chance to check out the frogs and salamanders in Bailey’s ponds and forests with Dan Kreisberg, inspiring naturalist and science teacher. Classics Day

Featuring classic boats, trains, cycles, cars, and more. Exhibitions will take place in various locations of the hamlet, including Sagamore Yacht Club, the OB Railroad Museum rail-yard and historic train station, Oak Cliff Sailing Center, 20th Century Cycles and throughout downtown. Participating restaurants will also be offering discounts throughout the day. A walking map will be available for the event. All are welcome. Noon to 4 p.m.

Landmarks Preservation Commission

The Town of Oyster Bay Landmarks Preservation Commission meeting at 7 p.m. in the Town Board Hearing Room, Town Hall East, 54 Audrey Ave. The commission was formed to recommend sites and structures within the Town of Oyster Bay which have historical, architectural or antiquarian significance. For further information call the Department of Planning and Development 624-6200. Meetings will also be held on July 20, Sept. 21, Nov. 16.

Open House for Day Break

The community is invited to an Open House to learn more about The Life Enrichment Center at Oyster Bay’s “Day Break” adult day care program at 1 p.m. The program provides a special setting for older adults who need extra care with daily activities and offers respite to the family caregiver. In addition, caregiver support meetings are held twice monthly by the center’s social worker. The Open House will be held in Christ Church’s parish hall, 61 E. Main St. Refreshments will be served. Chinese Auction Benefit

The Life Enrichment Center at Oyster Bay, 45 E. Main St., will hold a Chinese Auction with extravagant themed baskets. The preview is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The auction begins immediately after. Your $6 admission includes 25 tickets and coffee and cake. Larger ticket items are two for $5 and one for $3. Piano Recital

Muttontown Hikes

Enrollment for the hikes ($5) is limited and preregistration is required by calling 571-8500 weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The hike will begin at the Bill Paterson Nature Center on the preserve, Muttontown Ln., south of 25A, East Norwich.

•May 15: Woodland Wildflowers will cover approximately three miles of wooded trails and meadows. Along the trails, participants will be able to enjoy nature’s colors in bloom, including early spring flowers such as Snowdrops and Lesser Celandine and aromatic plants like Garlic Mustard and Spice Bush. In addition, at the Kettle Pond, participants will be able to view frogs and painted turtles, and along the trails and meadows small mammals, snakes and birds. 10 a.m. to noon.

•May 22: Early Bird Walk focuses on the spring migration of birds in the woods and meadows. As part of the program, there will be a demonstration of bird banding, displays of captured birds (that will be subsequently released), and a discussion of migration patterns. The walk is approximately three miles over mostly flat terrain; participants are encouraged to bring binoculars. 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Learn Sign Language at Mill Neck Manor

Sign Language Camp for Hearing Kids, hosted by Mill Neck Foundation, invites children ages 8 to 16 to learn a new language and have fun this summer. Held on the campus of Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf, the camp teaches beginning sign language in an enjoyable and unique way. In two sessions, July 11-15 and July 18-22, campers are divided by age (ages 8-12 and 13-16). Through activities, games and arts and crafts, campers are taught the sign language alphabet, numbers, signs for animals, foods, colors and more. Campers in session one will have basic conversations in sign by the end of the camp and those with a prior knowledge in session two will build on their current skills and focus on conversational sign. Session one campers are encouraged to return for the second week for additional fun and educational activities. Camp is held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily and costs $345 per week for each child (includes lunch, a sign language book, arts and crafts, a work journal, a bag and more).
