WWII Bomber Base Recreation

A extremely rare B-29 Superfortress, a B-17 Flying Fortress, a B-24 Liberator and a B-25 Mitchell bomber are among the operational WWII aircraft that will be open to the public between May 27 and May 30 at the American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport, 1230 New Hwy., Farmingdale, as part of the Bethpage Federal Credit Union Air Show at Jones Beach, saluting American veterans and those who continue to protect our freedoms. They will be joined by period fighters and paratrooper planes along with a column of WWII armor led by a Sherman tank. Other aircraft available for a flight experiences includes the Airpower’s “D-Day Mission” in an Airborne paratrooper plane, a T-6 Texan “Commanders” flight or a flight experience in an open cockpit Waco biplane that is right out of the Golden Age of Aviation. Inquire at www.americanairpowermuseum.org for donation levels and availability. Other aircraft available for a flight experiences includes the Airpower’s “D-Day Mission” in an Airborne paratrooper plane, a T-6 Texan “Commanders” flight or a flight experience in an open cockpit Waco biplane that is right out of the Golden Age of Aviation. Indoor/Outdoor Yard Sale/Pancake Breakfast

Held by the Farmingdale United Methodist Church, 407 Main St. (corner of Grant Ave.), from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine. All types of new and used items will be for sale, including household goods, jewelry, wooden roses, toys and new designer children’s clothing. The youth of the church will also be sponsoring a Pancake Breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m., offering pancakes, sausage, juice, coffee and tea for $5 adults; $2.50 children under 10 years old. All monies raised will support Church and mission projects.

Wednesday, June 1 Rebuilding Together, LI

The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Farmingdale Library, 116 Merritts Rd. (one quarter mile south of Hempstead Tpke. (Route 24) (249-9090). Rebuilding Together is a non-sectarian volunteer organization that repairs homes for low-income families. For further information, call 541-7322.

Polo Begins at Bethpage State Park

The New York State Office of Park, Recreation and Historic Preservation has announced that Country Farms Polo will begin hosting competitive polo matches, open to the public, at Bethpage State Park’s Polo Field in Farmingdale. Bring a lunch while enjoying the excitement of watching some of the top polo players from around the world. You can view polo matches from the grandstand or bring a blanket for sideline grass viewing. Glass items, pets, and alcohol are not permitted. Matches take place every Sunday at 3 p.m. beginning June 5 and continuing through October. Polo matches are free, however the Park’s Vehicle Use Fee of $8 is in effect. Facing the Challenges of Caregiving, Together

Juggling your time between children, career and caring for your parents? Senator Kemp Hannon invites you to “Facing the Challenges of Caregiving, Together.” Reserve a seat for an evening with the Eldercare Planning and Management Council. Solutions in meeting the many challenges caregivers face in addition to helping us examine if we are properly preparing ourselves will be presented. Topics include health and risk assessment, care options, senior placement, legal services and financial services. 7 to 9 p.m. at the Farmingdale Library, 116 Merritts Rd. Northside Elementary School Alumni/Faculty 50-Year Reunion

The celebration has been set for 4 p.m. The school reached its 50-year anniversary on Feb. 14. In addition to the traditional “Northside Birthday Party” held annually by the faculty and PTA for current students each February, a special program and reception will take place this year for the adult alumni and former and present faculty in June. Following student dismissal on June 10, a commemorative program will be held in Bicentennial Hall at the school. The ceremony will recognize Rosalie B. Samuels as the honored guest for her outstanding leadership and for the achievements that helped make Northside a special school. Self-guided tours of the school will follow. A reception at Stuart Thomas Manor will be held later in the evening for Northside alumni, who graduated from high school by 2000 as well as for former and present faculty and staff. Admission will be by prepaid ticket. Relatives and friends of the Northside alumni are asked to share the message about the event. Crossfire Comes to Farmingdale

The JC Café at Farmingdale United Methodist Church, 407 Main St. (corner of Grant Ave.), will host contemporary Christian singing group Crossfire. Doors open at 7 p.m. with complimentary coffee and dessert and the program begins at 7:30 p.m. Suggested donation is $5. Crossfire, a popular group of four talented musicians, is well-known for its uplifting Christ-centered music. The public is invited to share what promises to be an exciting and inspiring evening. WALK like MADD to Eliminate Drunk Driving

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) of LI will host WALK like MADD, a non-competitive fundraising walk in Farmingdale. Registration begins at 9 a.m., with the ceremony beginning at 10 a.m., at Farmingdale State College, 2350 Broadhollow Rd., and will raise funds and rally support for MADD’s Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving. The event will be attended by Senator Charles J. Fuschillo Jr. and Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg, who together recently helped pass “Leandra’s Law” as well as Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Chief Michael P. Sharkey, NC Chief Kevin Lowry and MADD’s National President, Laura Dean-Mooney. Family walk teams will be present honoring Police Officer Glen Ciano, Leandra Rosado, Katie Flynn, Stanley Rabinowitz, Police Officer Kenneth Baribault, Jason Shein and Karen Naclerio-Negrin, among many others who were killed or severely injured by drunk drivers. REPLICON XXV Scale Model Show/Contest

Held at the American Airpower Museum, 1230 New Hwy., Farmingdale, on June 11 and 12. The show features more than 40 categories, with awards in each, plus special awards. Additionally, raffles, kid’s make-n-take model program and vendors are included as well as the museum’s aircraft and armor displays. Admission: adults $12; seniors and veterans $10; first two children 6 to 12 years $8; additional children are free. Contest entrants: adult $15; juniors $12. PAL Youth Heart Health Awareness Day

The NC Police Activity League (NCPAL), Winthrop-University Hospital and CardiacScan Imaging are presenting Youth Heart Health Awareness Day from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Town Of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center, 167 Broadway, Hicksville. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in people under 30, including athletes. It runs in families and affects over 15,000 people on Long Island. Learn about the risk factors, how screenings can help, and what you need to prevent a family tragedy. Special guest appearance by NY Islander Matt Moulson.

Stroke Life Society is a community organization of survivors and co-survivors in the pursuit of living and helping others. A stroke can be very isolating. By sharing experiences and encouraging one another, together we can face and overcome common challenges. All welcome. RSVP is requested but not required.
