Going for a Natural High? Blood Donations Needed!

Tom McGee, Jr. called on behalf of the Italian-American Citizens Club Blood Drive being held on Tuesday, June 21 from 3 to 9 p.m. at their headquarters at 48 Summit Street. “A spaghetti and meatball dinner will be served to all donors,” he said.

Please call Tom McGee at 922-6289 or Gene King at 399-9046 for more information.

“We are holding Women’s Bocce that night so come by to donate blood and watch bocce with a glass of wine and just relax,” said Mr. McGee.

“The blood drive is very hard to sell,” he said. “We need not only our membership but the community to come out as well.

“My passion for the blood drive is to stir compassion with others to come and donate.

“I’ve always taken the attitude that there are four major blood groups: A, B, AB, and O – and of them, the rarest blood type is the one that is not there when needed.

“Each unit of blood has the potential to help three people since it can be divided into three parts such as blood plasma, platelets and to red blood cells. So if you want to be a hero give a unit of blood; you can save three people.

“June 21 is the first day of summer and that is when blood donations drop drastically,” he said, therefore the need. As for the reason for his passion, he said, “I never had a horse in this race. I’m grateful for a happy healthy family and this is a way to give thanks. We all have to find the way to give back and this is mine.

“We, the club, are just trying to do the right thing by our club and to give to the community. You may be on a street corner, standing next to a stranger and they might have given you the blood you needed. You will never know. Blood donors are unsung heroes. It is the neatest thing you can ever do. It’s a natural high – doing something good for someone who will never know,” said Mr. McGee.
