In tough economic times when many charitable organizations are finding it increasingly difficult to provide the same range of services to its most deserving, 56 lawyers and five law firms have joined the Legal Resource Network (LRN) to provide services to victims of domestic violence through the advocacy of Nassau County’s Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CADVNC).
CADVNC hosted a recognition luncheon to honor the pro bono services of these attorneys on Friday, June 10 at the University Club on the campus of Hofstra University.
Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy gave the keynote address to celebrate the commitment to the dedicated volunteer lawyers and law firms that have joined the LRN to provide pro bono legal services to victims of domestic violence.
“To have each and every one of you here and involved in some way is remarkable and truly a wonderful thing,” said McCarthy. “When you give yourself to your community, to your neighbors, to those less fortunate you get so much more out of it, you truly do; it’s something that many of us are chosen to do.”
Federal funding had been secured by Congresswoman McCarthy, with the support of Senators Charles Schumer, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Congressmen Gary Ackerman, Peter King, and Steve Israel, but will soon be exhausted.

The LRN attorneys received presidential recognition through a letter from Vice President Joseph Biden, Jr.
Biden wrote, “The proudest moment in my career was passing the Violence Against Women Act in 1994, and I am honored to be serving with a President who shares my level of passion and urgency to end sexual assault and domestic violence. This Administration’s commitment to ending domestic violence will not stop until every victim has a place to turn for support. I am thrilled that the NCCADV has created a network of over 40 lawyers to represent victims at no cost who would otherwise by waiting months for representation.”
LRN works with CADVNC to assist and empower victims of domestic violence and sexual assault while challenging and changing social systems that tolerate and perpetuate abuse.
In 2009, the attorneys provided 426 victims with services, including consultation and pro bono representation in court.
Senator Charles Schumer and Congressman Steve Israel also sent a letter of thanks to CADVNC and LRN. He said, “Thank you for your dedication and determination in assisting so many Long Islanders. Since 1978 you have offered a helping hand and strong and steady support to those who have been victims of domestic violence.”
CADVNC is the only certified source of services, with housing for domestic violence victims and their families.
For more than 30 years CADVNC has provided assistance to residents of Nassau County. CADVNC provides crisis intervention, counseling, legal consultation, advocacy, emergency housing, service referral, and more.
In 2009, CADVNC assisted 25 victims of domestic violence, 102 sexual assault survivors. Over 1,400 victims were given access to the CADVNC’s services and programs through a police project, and the 24-hotline responded to 5,858 calls in 2009.
