Matthew Colantonio, a 2007 Coca-Cola National Scholar from Garden City, graduated from Brown University on May 29, 2011, with dual degrees in Economics and History. On June 7, 2011, Matt was selected by the San Diego Padres, in the 22nd round, of this year’s Major League Baseball draft.
At Brown University, Matt was the Division I baseball team’s starting catcher for four years and team captain his junior and senior years. He earned MVP honors and was an All-Ivy League selection in 2010. In the 2011 baseball season, Matt led the Brown Baseball team in batting average, at-bats, runs scored, total hits, doubles, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage (0.462, third in the Ivy League). He was again selected for the All-Ivy League team in 2011 and was the starting catcher for the 2011 New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association All-Star game, played June 2, 2011, in Lowell, MA.
Matt started his professional baseball career with the Arizona Padres of the Arizona Rookie League, on June 10, 2011. After a weekend of mini-camp, Matt was advanced to the Eugene Emeralds, of Eugene, Oregon, a San Diego Padres Class A affiliate in the Northwest Baseball League.
