Lee Child’s best selling Jack Reacher series will soon reach book number 16, but that isn’t the big Jack Reacher news that recently came out.

According to multiple reports, Child’s ninth book in the series, “One Shot” is going Hollywood, and Tom Cruise will play the calm drifter who has no family, and enjoys staying off the grid.

Christopher McQuarrie will direct “One Shot” and the film is scheduled to come out in 2013.

For those who aren’t fans of Lee Child’s series, Jack Reacher is a former military policeman who wanders throughout the country and always seems to find himself in the middle of some kind of controversy.

Reacher is a 6’5” tall, 250 pound drifter who had impeccable training during his military career.

Child recently responded to the Cruise news saying “Reacher’s size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way,” according to Deadline.com.

Child’s “One Shot” follows Reacher who is soaking in the sun on a beach in Miami at the same time a gunman hides in parking garage and kills five innocent people after shooting into a crowd of people in a small Indiana city. The shooter’s name is James Barr and after the sniper is tracked down by police he tells his lawyer to “Get Jack Reacher for me.”

Lee Child first introduced Reacher to the world in his first book “Killing Floor” where Reacher unravels a giant conspiracy in small Georgia town.

“The Affair”–the 16th book in the series–is scheduled to hit U.S. stores in September.

Cruise is currently shooting the big-screen adaptation of the Broadway Musical “Rock of Ages” which is scheduled to come out next year.
