On the same day the postal system was established in 1775, the U.S. Postal Service announced it’s considering closing over 3,000 locations nationwide.

The move places over 3,700 local offices, branches and stations under review for possible closing, including three on Long Island–Reckson Plaza Station in Uniondale, Setauket and Penataquit in Bay Shore, the U.S. Postal Service announced on Tuesday.

Currently, the post office operates 31,871 offices across the nation, down from 38,000 a decade ago. In a statement, Postmaster General Patrick Donahue said customers are not using post offices to conduct business as much as they used to, given the growth of Internet commerce in recent years.

“Our customer’s habits have made it clear that they no longer require a physical post office to conduct most of their postal business,” Donahue said. “The Postal Service of the future will be smaller, leaner and more competitive and it will continue to drive commerce, serve communities and deliver value.”

Most of the offices under review are in rural areas and have low volumes of business. For communities without a retail post office, the postal service will introduce the Village Post Office–which would be operated by pharmacies, grocery stores, and other local businesses.

“By working with third-party retailers, we’re creating easier, more convenient access to our products and services when and where our customers want them,” Donahoe said.
