Emergency Notifications

In the Incorporated Village’s efforts to provide the most reliable communications with residents and businesses within the village, we have implemented Swiftreach Networks, Inc., (Swift 911) as our emergency notification service provider. Swift 911 is a computerized telephone calling system that is used to notify the village’s residents and businesses of an emergency situation such as a severe storm evacuation or a dangerous situation. When the system is activated at Village Hall, each resident and business within the Village of Garden City receives a telephone message with the emergency alert.

If residents have an unlisted telephone number or have telephone service through Cablevision, Vantage Cable and MagicJack, they may not be listed within this system. These residents are encouraged to register online (www.gardencityny.net) or to send a brief note to the attention of the Village Clerk, 351 Stewart Avenue, Garden City, New York 11530, providing your name, address and telephone number.

Nassau County Village Officials Association (NCVOA) — East Coast Power

I am pleased to announce that the Village of Garden City is a participant in the Nassau County Village Officials Association (NCVOA) natural gas buying group that the NCVOA has undertaken through a program with East Coast Power and Gas and that East Coast Power and Gas will be offering this program to village residents and commercial establishments. As an East Coast Power and Gas customer, your natural gas rate each is guaranteed to be 8 percent lower and businesses are guaranteed to save 8.625 percent on the sales tax, as well as receiving an 8 percent discount. There is no long-term commitment and you can opt out of the program at any time. Please note that if you sign on to this program, your natural gas bill, gas delivery and emergency services will continue to be provided by NationalGrid.

We have been informed by East Coast Power and Gas that they will be mailing information to residents and businesses within Garden City regarding their savings program in approximately two weeks. You can also obtain additional information about this program on the home page at www.ncvoa.com.  If you are interested in enrolling in the NCVOA’s Natural Gas Program, please call East Coast Power and Gas at (516) 442-0155.

Well Check Program

Last week’s heat wave serves as a good reminder to check on any neighbor who is alone, disabled or otherwise in need of assistance.

The Garden City Police Department has a Well Check Program, which provides a service for the residents. The Police Department’s Well Check Program is available to any senior citizen, a person with a disability, or to any person suffering a hardship. Police Commissioner Ernest J. Cipullo has advised me that residents can contact the Police Department and be placed on its Well Check Log.  Each morning, a person who is placed on the Police Department’s Log can call to check in and let us know if they are okay or in need of assistance. If a person who is on the list does not contact the Police Department, an attempt will be made to contact that person either by phone and/or in person.  Any person who wishes to be placed on the Garden City Police Department’s Well Check Log may contact the Desk Officer at (516) 465-4101.

Reminder – Automatic Water Sprinklers

As a reminder, July 31 and Aug. 1 result in two consecutive odd days. All residents with automatic sprinklers should remember to reset their clocks at this time to comply with the village lawn watering regulations. Lawn watering is permitted between the hours of 5 to 10 a.m. and 6 to 10 p.m.

Outdoor Dining

It is wonderful to see so many Garden City residents as well as visitors to our village enjoying alfresco dining on New Hyde Park Road, Franklin Avenue and Seventh Street. This year there are 34 businesses that have permits. There is no doubt that alfresco dining is an overwhelming success. I encourage residents to come early and combine shopping with dining outside at their favorite place. The outdoor dining will continue through the month of November.

Parking Field #12 – East Side of Franklin Avenue Between 12th and 14th Streets

Work in Parking Field #12 continues. Phase #1, which is north of Thirteenth Street, encompassing a portion of the northern half of the lot, was completed and reopened last week, with Phase #2 being closed. Work in Phase #2, which consists of the remaining portion on the northern half of the parking field, continues this week. Please do not park within the construction zone and take note of any temporary parking restrictions that are posted by the Police Department. Additional parking can be found in Parking Field #11 (west of Franklin Avenue) and in Parking Field #9E (south of Eleventh Street). We thank everyone for their patience during this much needed infrastructure improvement.

If you have any questions, please contact the Garden City Public Works Department at (516) 465-4004 (Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.)

Curb, Sidewalk and Road Improvements

Infrastructure improvements have begun throughout the village. Work started last week on Prescott Street, Plaza Road and Main Avenue and will continue this week. Other streets scheduled for work are Fifteenth Street, Boylston Street, Tremont Street, Spruce Street and Bedell Avenue. During construction, detours should be expected at these locations. Residents in these areas will be given notice ahead of the start of construction on their street.

Board of Trustees’ Summer Meeting Schedule

During July and August the board of trustees will meet once a month. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, Aug. 18 at 8 p.m.

Village’s Website

I encourage residents to periodically utilize the village’s website for information regarding the village’s operations, as well as items of seasonal and special interest. The address is www.gardencityny.net. For your convenience, listed on the village’s homepage under the heading of Administration is information listing Village Hall hours and a directory with the telephone numbers of Village Department Heads.
