The Town Needs to Become a CLG!

At the recent East Norwich Civic Association meeting the topic of a Certified Local Government status came up once again. It is a New York State designation that opens the door to state preservation funding.

It is a subject this newspaper has long campaigned for.

Recently – with a lack of requests for landmark designations and no meetings for about 10 years of the Town of Oyster Bay Landmarks Preservation Commission, we have rarely mentioned the need for a CLG. But now with the consideration of two new landmarks and with the proposals about Snouder’s Corner Drugstore as well as the future of the Trousdell property – having the CLG status might enable local groups to receive preservation funding from the state.

We urge those of you interested in preservation to ask the Town of Oyster Bay to re-think its decision about CLG – to not accept it – and to urge them to seek it.

We were a nod away from getting it. All we had to do was ask the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Preservation for the designation and we would have had it. It’s time to step up to the plate.
