Currently there’s a national campaign to recognize the Puerto Princesa Underground River as one of the new seven wonders of nature.

“Pushing for the inclusion of the Puerto Princesa Underground River to be proclaimed as one of the New Wonders of Nature should be a binding force for all of us, Leytenos,” Board Member Tiu said in a PIA press release.

According to the press release, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Leyte under the leadership of Vice Governor Mimyet Bagulaya noted that the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is one of the most important biodiversity conservation areas of the Philippines.

The Puerto Princesa Underground River is five miles long and features a limestone or karsts landscape and is said to be the longest navigable underground river in the world. It reportedly flows directly into the sea.

In 1999, the five mile long river was included in the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites.

Currently, the underground river is the only finalist from the Philippines and in the top 14 of the 28 official finalists, selected by inernational experts who voted in the first round from 2007-2010.

According to Newsinfo.inquirer, online voters can register at www.new7wonders.com. Only one vote is allowed for each registered e-mail address. Multiple votes by SMS are allowed until midnight of Aug. 8. From Aug. 9 to Nov. 8, each mobile number will be allowed only one vote. The final round of voting that started in 2009 will end midnight of Nov. 10. November 11, 2011 will mark the New 7 Wonders of Nature.
